I don't use an immersion heater. For some reason I don't like the idea of leaving something in a fermenting brew. I don't want to take a risk of introducing an infection. Although I'm sure if it's properly sanitized, it shouldn't be a problem.

In the winter, I sometimes use a heater tray to stand my fermenter bucket on. When I used King Kegs, I also stand the keg on a heater tray in the colder months for the first week of secondary fermentation to condition. Then transfered it to a cooler place to clear for a month or so.

Neither have I used a digital thermometer. I use the cheap stick on liquid crystal type. Although these do apear to be about 2'c innacurate. So I just have to remember to compensate for that.

From Andy's wonderful/scary yeast cam pics, I remember he uses a digital thermometer (Don't view these pics if you're of a nervous disposition though :o ).

I don't think yeast cam is active right now.

Sometimes when Andy is brewing, he sets up a web cam to show his yeast fermenting. He has amazingly scary yeast from the Hogs Back Brewery, which ferments with huge great tendrils. One day I'm sure it's going to engulf the whole of Basingstoke! :o Or it might be Aldershot.

It's what Reg watches when he doesn't have any paint to watch drying.

Ian, the thermometer is a cheapo Chinese thing from Ebay.

I don't use it now as it's not very accurate.

I use one of these (bought from the same seller who has loads):-

I have the top one of the thermometers and its great (bought from same person as IAndy.) The heater is just the same as an aquarium heater and much better than belt heaters etc as it is thermostatically controlled. Probably a good idea to insulate the fermentor as well. I was fortunate enough when I bought a fermenting bin full of wine equip at a car boot sale for £1 there was an unused boots immersion heater like that in it :) Some people eh?

Anyone know where I can get a thermowell to fit to a fermentor?

Hi Ian,

I use a simple digital thermomenter left in the brew during fermentation just to keep an eye on the temp. It's similar looking to Andy's and I got it from Thermometers4u on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Digital-Max-Min-A ... dZViewItem
