Dodgeball ale 29-7-07

Had a BBQ last nite which put a big dent in the beer reserves (gave me enormous satisfaction to see all those untouched carryouts of carlsberg and harp etc), so i now have two empty cornies just crying out to be filled with beer.
SWMBO has already stated that she wants an easy drinking golden ale low in bitterness for the next brew, so thats what i will be attempting to produce.
Thinking along the lines of

4.25 Kg lager Malt
0.25 Kg Carapils
0.25 Kg Vienna
0.25 Kg Wheat
mash at 65 C for 90 mins
Hopped to about 20 IBU with Saaz hops 3 %.

35g 90 mins
21g 30 mins
21g 10 mins

ferment with either nottingham or US-05

Any comments on the hopping schedule (i have about 80g of saaz to play with).

I've never used carapils before and was wondering what 0.25 Kg in a brew like this would acheive (i want this to be realtively light ie easy drinking) should i take it out of the recipe or will such a small amount provide a nice amount of body???

Just realised i have no irish moss or protofloc (could i still brew a golden ale???)

That% age of carapils will barely be evident.May help head retention, but I could never detect any benifits or "marked " differences in beers I've used it in.
personally I'd go with the US05 as it will push the hops to the fore and keep the malt clean and crisp with that mash temp.
Saaz =YUM.

I did a pale ale today that was bittered with POR(27 IBU) and has 1 gram per liter of saaz at both 10 min and flame out.

pitched with T58 for a belgian spicy profile.previous brew was same grist and hops with US 05.

Thats good to know about the carapils i didn't want it to have too much body anyway.
i was leaning towards the US-05 (the only downside with it is that its a bugger to get it to sediment).

Was all the 27 IBU from the 10 min and flameout addition??

No .Pride of ringwood (10.2 AAU)at 60 min for 27 IBU.

Saaz for flava/aroma.

just re-read your post, that was a silly question on my part, there is no way saaz at 1g a L would give you those IBUs :oops: .

Those 3% alpha Saaz. Would they perchance be gold foil block ones, 2005 harvest? If so, you'll be looking at about 2%aa max, after allowing for age. Apologies if you already knew that, or they're fresher hops.

They are the gold foil saaz but 2006 crop, i don't suppose you would have an idea what AA % im looking at for these??

Edit: Should i perhaps substitute the 90 min bittering hop addition from saaz to say another hop??

Just got in from a beery afternoon and roast dinner with some friends. I'd calculate on 2.5%aa for 10 month old Saaz (assuming September harvest)

I'd still go for softer bitterness, as you're after a gentler ale, so perhaps copper hop with Goldings or Fuggles, and use a fair wodge of the Saaz late or in steep.

...might be a bit late, looks like you'd have boiled by now.

SteveD, yeah too late, but thanks for the input, i'll work out the IBU's on the basis of 2.5 and see what i get.

P2 Finished a good while ago, but didn't have time to post as i'd fired up the BBQ :D .
25 Litres of 1044 wort in the fermentor, i'll check out your thread next to see how your day went.
