busy and nice brewday stout

today i had a busy day, but i was still abble to brew a batch of stout and do a kind of kegerator.

the brew was nice and easy, i improved a bit my eficiency, and everything went well! :thumb:

here's the recipe:

Single step Infusion at 67°C for 120 Minutes.
Fermented at 20°C with Safale S-04

i was expecting 17 liters with an OG of 1049, but i got it a bit higher..... not a problem :D

Nice grain bill. Out of interest, did you cap the mash with the dark malts or mash all together, full duration?

i added the dark grains at the beginning of the mash. Did a glucan rest with the flaked barley.

thanks 8) usually in my free days, I help my family at our restaurant, roasting piglets and Kids in oven! Typical dishes here, in this region of Portugal. While i m roasting, i have time to brew :D

Cheers. My first AG stout was a Guinness clone. I messed up the brew and had something tasting very bitter/acrid, I couldn't drink it and had to tip it after 12 months. Had 2 pints of Guinness draught on the weekend and the same taste was detectable but every so slightly. I'm going to have to revisit the brew at some time. I'm thinking about substituting some black malt for chocolate.

this is tanins, they come from the dark malts, you use dehusked roasted barley, to avoid that!! or use simple grain bill: 70% pale malt, 20% flaked barley and 10% roasted barley. With this bill, you cant go wrong!! OG:1046, Fg:1010 and 45IBUs!!

yesterday in the morning i kegged this batch! Ended up with a FG of 1017, giving 4,81% ABV. it is carbonating now, and will be in time for my birthday party in 3 weeks! i will have two beers running in my kegerator! this stout and a Mango APA that i made for the ladies!! for the shitty lager drinkers i have a barrel of regular lager that i have in my restaurant!!
In a week i will post a foto of the carbonation test pint B)

Steeping grains in cold liquour rather than mashing can achieve the same thing. Think of mashing dark grains as like holding coffee on a hot plate for an hour.

yesterday, i tried this one to check carbonation!! scientific porpouses, only...... spot on, and flavors are wonderfull...one of my best until now....

It seems counter intuitive to drink Stout when the weather is balmy but it can be lovely at "fridge" temps on a hot day. Very popular in the Caribbean and parts of Africa.

actually, its not so warm here, at the moment...14ºC at the moment....and cloudy...... but for me its always a moment for a stout :D and i will have more beer avaiable at the party, that people can choose what they want?
