Gelatin fining
Hey all
I have a basic wheat beer (about 20 ltrs) I've been crash cooling in the garage over the weekend.
I have heard that gelatine makes a hoofing fining agent but I have no idea what I'm doing with it.
The stuff I have is in the phot below, what do people recommend?

Re: Gelatin fining
Isn’t wheat beer supposed to have some yeast in suspension?

A Kristalweisse.
Dissolve in warm pre boiled water, pour into keg then rack your beer onto it.

15 grams in a cup add a little cold water stir and leave for five minutes. Add a little hot,not boiling, water stir until it is completely dissolved. Then simply pour it into the beer no need to stir and leave for three days. This must be performed when all yeast activity has ceased or it will not work. Best done after transfer to a secondary vessel.

Re: Gelatin fining
I buy gelatin in little envelopes (see below), and use half an envelope per 23 litre batch (one envelope holds 7 grams total). The remainder is taped up shut to keep nasties out.
I put the gelatin in a half cup of cool water, covered, and allow it to sit for 15 minutes to soften. Then it's heated to near boiling, but not to boiling(!), and stirred to dissolve with a sanitized spoon. I add it to the secondary FV immediately after heating.
That's done about 1 or 2 weeks before bottling, after the secondary FV has had some time to settle, 2 or 3 weeks.

Re: Gelatin fining
Just a word of warning. Gelatine works well in kegs or cornies but not so well if you are bottling as it makes the sediment more fluid and easily disturbed when pouring.

Re: Gelatin fining
If you brew beer correctly and with the right yeast you should be able to invert the bottle without disturbing the yeast film on the bottom which should resemble a very thin spray coat of paint. Plus it is perfectly OK to fine beer before bottling in fact if you don't you will have a very thick deposit on the bottom of the bottle.jasonbrooker1985 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 03, 2017 9:43 pmThanks wezzel01. Gelatin fining
I use the sheets which work well. I soften 2 up in a jug of cold water for 10 minutes leaving them totally covered. I then empty the water, take the now softened sheets out and fill the jug with approx 250ml of water straight from the kettle which works well for me. I then slowly feed the sheets in which immediately dissolve and finish off with a stir.
I fined this Christmas brew this morning, quite cool to see them at work already.
