Maybe we haven't. Do you know if it is a bottling strain or nor? That's the first question.

I've given up scavenging yeast from bottles because more times than not nowadays it's a bottling strain..
Wish I'd been around and brewing when brewers were getting yeast out of Guinness bottles...

I remember it well. I may have even contributed to the end of bottle conditioned Guinness. Fed up with contaminated bottles I removed the labels, which had codes on the back, and sent them to Guinness with a letter of complaint. While I was at work a rep from Guinness knocked on the door and asked my then wife where I had bought them. Not knowing the answer she gave him the name of my " local" Off he went to speak to the landlord,an ex boxer, who told him to eff off. He then returned to my house and left a sum of money which was just the right amount to buy a case of Newcastle Brown  Not long after they stopped selling bottle conditioned Guinness.

Isn't White Shield a bottling strain nowadays?

Think so. Could not get the beer for several years and when it re-appeared the yeast was crap in comparison.

I think its brewed by fullers now. I've used fullers 1845 yeast many times and the bonus is you get a fab pint to drink while preparing the starterImage

Agree about Fullers it's a cracking yeast but I'm sure I read they still used the
Gales strain for the Gales beers.
