Co2 - food grade

Post by Manngold » Tue May 29, 2018 7:21 pm

Recently purchased some of the mini kegs that have a mini co2 regulator and they take a threaded co2 bulb. Does Co2 need to be good grade? Are there any risks with using those that aren't?

Thanks

Ah, I see you said threaded bulbs, and the ones on the site I linked to say food grade for the unthreaded bulbs, but don't specify for the threaded one...curious!

Yes, for carbonating beverages, it should be 'food grade'. I've brought this issue up one or twice only to hit a wall of opinionated ignorance. Being 'reliably informed' by someone's mate who works in a welder's supplier 'CO2 is CO2'! Of course CO2 is CO2, but it really should be QC'd to demonstrate its suitability for carbonating beverages. Note the historical recalls in industry! I mainly condition naturally, because my CO2 supply isn't QC'd, unlike Sodastream bottles

I have no idea about the ins and outs of whether it’s ok, but I’ve got a huge torpedo bottle of non food safe co2 I’ve been using for over 3 months now, and I’m not dead yet. I don’t have any odd tastes or anything out of the ordinary in the beer either.

Isn't it something to do with the cylinder it's in rather than the co2 ? Sure I read that somewhere

I believe fire extinguishers have a dip tube which can cause problems with the regulator as liquid CO2 comes out. I still wouldn't use a non-food grade CO2 though - not everything kills you straight away!
