Fermentation down to 1.001
*solved* idiot home brewer can't read a hydrometer.
I have done an AG brew on a GrainFather, it was Sara's Japuir which seems quite a popular recipe, I have also been trying to brew this for a while now with various recipes. The recipe called for 2 packets of Nottingham yeast.
All went well with the brew other than having a poor mash efficiency, (66 deg mash with 75 deg mash out) down 4 points from predicted, ABV down from 5.4 to predicted 4.9.
Rehydrated the two packets of yeast and pitched into 22.5 litres of wort on Wednesday.
Dropped to 1.001 today, sample tastes bitter as expected, nice aroma and that Japuir citrus hit, bit dry.
Trying to understand how the gravity has dropped so much, never pitched two packets of yeast before, no sign of infection, I thought there was only so much sugar for yeast to feed on, normally mash at 65 too. Any thoughts?

What SG does the hydrometer give for water?
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

1.000, tilt and hydrometer are pretty much giving the same reading. just checked it I cocked up reading the sample its 1.010 which is much better, not worried about the tilt, as its only a guide, maybe has some krausen stuck to it.

Strange things, Tilts. I thought it was going to be the best thing ever but, having used it many times now, I've decided it's just, as you say, a guide.MarkF_2703 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 11, 2018 1:10 pm1.000, tilt and hydrometer are pretty much giving the same reading. just checked it I cocked up reading the sample its 1.010 which is much better, not worried about the tilt, as its only a guide, maybe has some krausen stuck to it.
It never gives a gravity reading which matches the hydrometer or refractometer at the beginning of a fermentation. It has to be recalibrated every brew. And I've no idea what the 'uncalibrated' reading on it means.
It's fun watching the rate the gravity drops at the beginning of the fermentation but, in truth, for the end of the primary fermentation I'm better off watching the rate of bubbles through the blow off tube.

Re: Fermentation down to 1.001
Its my third ferment with the tilt, its pretty much been within a point apart from this one, but as you say great to watch the action and for me the straight line at the end indicating its finished, I still get blow off but thats just CO2, will give this another 3 days to clear up check again then crash if its stable. Only having the ne fermenter its time in use can be the bottle neck for me.
Re: Fermentation down to 1.001
I find with the tilt the reading is way off at the begining and for a day after. If i calibrate the tilt to read the same as the hydrometer at the begining of fermentation i find then the readings at the end of fermentation are well of on the tilt.
So i dont calibrate it to read the same as the hydrometer at the begining and after about a day it starts to read the same as the hydrometer all through the fermentation.

The uncalibrated data you see is what the tilt is reading minus any calibration points you have added.guypettigrew wrote: ↑Sat Aug 11, 2018 8:07 pmStrange things, Tilts. It arrives calibrated and that is what you can see in the 'uncalibrated' box.
Confusing...
