Insulated mash tuns
Insulated mash tuns
I'm thinking of the ready-made SS stockpot type thing with integral insulation that were common a few years ago.
Where are people obtaining them from these days?

Angel home brew is where I bought mine. He will customise the pot to suit your requirements, such as temperature probes and bottom draining. I use a shower rose from Toolstation ( 300 mm) for sparging held in a lab stand.
Re: Insulated mash tuns
Not cheap are they!!? And that's without a tap or grain filter (though I could easily re-purpose the one from my current MT).
I might have to look at getting a basic stock pot and adding insulation.

If you go the stock pot route and add the insulation then a good option is a reflective foil type which you can wrap around the pot. I did this for a wax melter and it works fine. Basically is looks like bubble wrap with foil on both sides.
Re: Insulated mash tuns
I might have a 50l one up for sale in a couple of weeks. It has a tap and a filter. Holds heat very well.
I bought a Grainfather so it may be redundant. I just need to get home to try my new toy.

Re: Insulated mash tuns
Just to explain my reason for wanting this: I'm planning my shed brewstand.
At the moment I get by with 2 vessels, 1) a boiler which also acts as a HLT and 2) a false bottom mash tun. However, my mash tun is an old Electrim boiler, and still has a working element in it (which I don't currently use). So I thought if I got a SS mash tun I could re-purpose the Electrim bin as my HLT.
I'm looking at a 3 tier 3 vessel system with a pump to get the wort from the boiler, through the counterflow, and into the fermenter.

Thanks, but 50l is too big for me. I need 27l (or just over).

I had to have a lie down after looking at those prices.barneey wrote: ↑Tue Sep 11, 2018 6:37 pmMark has the high quality items

Thanks for the tip. Sounds like a good plan.

With the approx 30 ltr thermopot there is no need to spend much on a filter. I got mine from Mark second hand six years ago with a couple of Ikea splatter guards (£4). Surround the guard in thick split silicone hose, stuff a thin hose (RO water pipe) inside to stop the rim moving and it gives a tight seal no grain gets through. A small sliver of metal in the bottom drain hole supports the base of the metal handle on the guard about 1cm off the bottom of the tun. The guards are strong and don't rust. The handle on the guard is needed to break the seal to remove it for cleaning!
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

I can't quite visualise that - do you have a link to any pics of the arrangement?vacant wrote: ↑Wed Sep 12, 2018 8:29 amWith the approx 30 ltr thermopot there is no need to spend much on a filter.
