Water analysis by Wallybrew/Pheonix analytical

Post by Simonh82 » Mon Sep 24, 2018 11:19 pm

I was a previous forum member but my account seems to have been deleted after not visiting for a while. I'd like to get a water analysis done by forum member Wallybrew who I believe is behind Phoenix Analytical. I can't send a PM as my account now counts as a new account. Does anyone have an email address that I could contact him on?

I had my water analysed by Murphy and Son's previously and whilst most of the numbers stacked up fairly well against my local water report, I could never get the ion balance right in Brew 'n' Water, which made me think something is amiss. It also doesn't help that Murphy don't give a figure for sodium, so that had to come from my local water report.

Anyway, if you know how I can contact him, or how long before I can PM, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks, Simon

Back in 2017 Neil invoiced me for £25. He has a great reputation and was a pleasure to deal with. Obviously I was also happy with the report

First class service and worth every penny. Works really well with Graham's water treatment calculator available on here. Under JBK links/ calculators

I got one 2 years ago and agree with all of the above, great service and works well with the calculator on the site. I think I will reach out and get another one now reading this! :)

So why does Murphys get a bad rep? My beer has improved since using their recommendations but I’m always looking for improvements!

Murphy's do not determine the quantity of sodium. This is a major shortcoming as it is not then possible to perform an ion balance to cross-check all major ions present. All would be well if their results were consistent, but they are not and they don't know because this omission means they can't check their performance either. I have had one test done by Murphy's that was incorrect and I'm not alone.

I emailed late last night and got a prompt reply today. He replied from enquiries(at)phoenix-analytical.co.uk, so that might be a better address to get him on.

He said he would be running the next round of analysis on about the 15th Oct so if others are interested, you've got a couple of weeks to get in there. Cost is £26. The test covers:
Sodium
Potassium
Magnesium
Calcium
Chloride
Nitrate
Phosphate
Sulphate
Total alkalinity expressed as calcium carbonate
pH
electrical conductivity
total residual chlorine
