Protofloc - How much?

Post by gobuchul » Tue Nov 20, 2018 11:14 am

How much protofloc do people use?

According to The Malt Miller you only need 1/4 tablet per 23l batch. However, if I bought recipe packs from the Worcester Hop Shop or The Home Brew Co, then they have included 1 whole tablet for use in the brew.

That's quite big difference.

Is there a difference in the make up of the tablets?

My first batch I used 1 per as instructed from the THBC.

Now I am using MM’s, I use a 1/4.

When I googled it, it appears we have been using far too much generally but I have not noticed any difference in effectiveness or beer quality.

So I have taken from the above that it really doesn’t matter.

I've always used half a tablet (wherever I've got them from).

I can't remember why though. Presumably that was the instruction on the first pack I ever got.

I don't understand why they don't make them smaller if you don't need a whole one in a standard brew. Unless it's a way of getting you to use too much and spend more money than you need to...

Yes, as above: a quarter tablet will often be enough, and certainly half a tablet per 25L is very sufficient. If significantly more is used, the coagulation can start to become more gloopy than really needed, which isn't always a problem but it can cause some hop filters to clog more easily.

As Kev says, too much Protafloc can cause clogging problems.

I use Protafloc granules (easier to weigh out the right amount than the tablets) and have found that 0.75g in the boil is adequate. This is for a 22-24 litre final length.

I weighed a tablet and then divided by four to get the correct amount per 23 litre batch. Now I crush all my tablets when I buy them and put them in a little jar. I found a little measuring spoon that took approximately the right weight and just add one spoonful per batch. I'm don't remember exactly what the weight was but somewhere around 1-1.5g/23 litre batch
A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

I use the granules too. It says on the tub to use 1/4 tsp per (i think) 25l. So the tub lasts ages.

I use dried Irish moss, 1 tsp per 23L batch. I find it clumps proteins better than protofloc tablets. Mind, if one tablet is too much, it could just be that a double-dosing Of protofloc is not clumping the proteins together as effectively. My understanding is that too much will do this - a bit like dosing isinglass.

As some have suggested above, it does depend a lot on the type of hop filter you use. I use braided stainless steel sleeve (quite fine and not recommended with hop pellets) and as a result don't use more than 1/4 tablet … in a 45L batch. The amount of trub likely to be created makes a difference too, so a low gravity light coloured beer (should produce less break protein) might be worth the risk of 1/3 to 1/2 a tablet.

Yeah this. Page 3 has an optimization chart and you'll only lose a few hundred ml's of wort. It's different for each beer though, which doesn't help much with home brewing where you brew something different every time.
For a 23L batch, mine maxes out at 0.23 tablets. So yeah, a quarter. As long as you're getting a big hot break with lots of cauliflower bits moving around don't worry too much.

1/3 tablet in weak beer. 1/2 tablet in strong beer. Approx 28 litres boil volume.
