Hambledon Bard refill S30 discontinued

Post by Horden Hillbilly » Wed Jan 02, 2019 8:11 pm

Just seen this on Hop & Grape Facebook page:

Hambleton Bard have today informed all homebrew stores that due to cost of production they will no longer be able to supply gas refills.
All homebrew stores are extremely angry and frustrated as we know how many of their own customers rely on this method of carbonation.
I have been on the phone today constantly discussing options with suppliers, breweries, gas companies and others.
At the moment we understand someone may come forward with a view to taking on the S30 refilling business but this could be a way off.
For now we would recommend the following options.
The Pin valve conversion kit can be used to adapt the S30 making it compatible with gas pellets.
There is a soda stream adapter which allows you to use a soda stream bottle to carbonate.
Additional sugar in the secondary carbonation would help prevent your beer loosing pressure.
We are looking at options to refil ourselves however this does involve additional equipment and regulation.
When I hear more information I will of course pass it onto all customers of The Jolly Brewer and Hopandgrape.co.uk.

Thanks for this HH.

Just ordered the last four of the new full cylinders from my LHBS. A bit pricey, but had to be done.

With what's already here it should keep me going for a few years. I don't use much gas, one cylinder lasts several months.

Thanks again.

A further thought; will Hambleton Bard still supply the new cylinders? Odd if they will, as they'll still need to be filled somehow!

I was wondering the same myself Guy, what I copied from Hop & Grape's Facebook page above does seem to suggest that it's only the refills that are being discontinued.

They made one style redundant a while back too, had to purchase new. HB sound like a right pain in the arse to me.

That's rather annoying. If the S30 cylinders dry up then will the valves disappear from production too?

There must be an alternative.

Soda stream bottles look to be a few pounds more expensive though.

Don't panic I will post a picture of an adapter that uses a normal gas bottle in conjunction with an S30 injector. I made it years ago when we moved to France where S30 cylinders are not available and no retailers will post them to France. Don't throw away your empty cylinders because the are needed to make the adapter.

If possible source a pub gas bottle & reg valve..
Or a small co2 fire extinguisher bottle conversion

Seems to me all the homebrew shops should refuse to stock all Hambleton Bard Products, kits etc. That might concentrate their minds. !!!

There is another option, fit a Corny Gas Post (evilbay/aliexpress) and use a proper cylinder and regulator.

It will cost more to set up but if your only popping a bit of gas into a pressure barrel a cylinder is likey to last for many years.

On of the reasons I moved to cornies and a 7kg cylinder several years ago. (my "local" (80 mile round trip) stopped selling refilled sodastreams, so had to get HB ones and since I had traded all my old ones in... )
Costs more in the short term but worth it long term.

That would be great if you could post that picture IPA, I could see it being very useful to forum members.

Apparently Hambleton Bard are about to start selling an adaptor to allow Sodastream gas cylinders to be used. £12.50 or thereabouts.

Can you get Sodastream cylinders in France?

What about the deposit value of the empty S30s? Will HB be taking them back and refunding the deposit we paid for THEIR property??
