water level float arm

Post by john luc » Sat Jan 12, 2019 10:55 am

Can someone help me with this. For the life of me I cannot remember what this yoke is called again, it's a pipe that you would connect to the bottom outlet of a tank. The pipe is turned to point up then bent in a U shape to point down. You can then shift the angle of the pipe to set the overflow level in the tank. It's old technology that a friend has found at a brewery he is renovating. [-o<

What, a bit like a ball cock in a toilet tank or central heating top up tank?

No this arm allows you to adjust the water level in a tank by you moving the angle it is set at. The more you adjust it side ways the liquid would flow out of it.

Love a valentine arm. Such an elegant way of balancing flow in and out of a mash tun.

Yes, exactly the right description.

I found an image but then wondered if it was necessary to adjust the angle to change the height. Suppose the inverted "U" was permanently set for an inch above the grain bed for the maximum grain bill the mash tun could take, then once the flow rate has been correctly set on the input tap, apart from needing a bit of extra hot water, would it matter if the water level was perhaps four inches above the grain when sparging a smaller batch?

(I've only fly sparged a couple of times)
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

I don't think it'll be a problem unless you want to drain the mash tun with it attached (in which case it needs to be moved so you can lower it with the liquid level).

Remember that the U must be below the top of the mash tun rim or your mash tun will overflow. Also don't forget the vent at the top of the U to break siphon.
