0.01g accuracy scales up to around 200g or 500g
Hi
I'm just wondering if anyone can recommend some scales
with around 0.01g accuracy scales up to around 200g or 500g.
There seems to be a number on amazon such as
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ascher-Portabl ... 01FQHE25U/
would that be fine?

Fairly accurate 0.1g resolution scales are probably better than cheap Chinese 0.01g resolution scales of unknown accuracy.
Beware of 0.01g resolution scales, you can find yourself trapped into the need to measure everything out to the nearest 0.01g. I know, 'cos I do it! I'm trying hard to measure things to the nearest 0.1g, but this period of "cold turkey" is hard.

I decided to order that cheapo one just to play with. I saw you can get the weights from the royal mint of coins, so i'll test it with that.
Haha, I'll have to beware of measuring things too precisely. I recently picked up a new pH meter that claims to be accurate to 0.01pH, so I fear it's already starting

Yes, testing is worthwhile because of course resolution is very different to accuracy. Logic might suggest there would be no point in having an extra digit if the underlying accuracy wasn't up to it, but salesmen may have a rather different logic! Could be a bargain if it comes up good.

From my unextensive testing:
2x 50p (1997 coins) weigh exactly 8.00g with it.
Some others from later, weigh around 8.09g or so.

I bought some cheap ubiquitous 0.01g/200g scales and never looked back. I test them with pound coins at 9.5g now and then, and they're great! It's true though, you do start measuring everything with them. No longer am I happy to accept hop additions that may be 1g one way or the other! Haven't yet used them for malt, but if I ever do, that's the day I should probably find another hobby.

For water additions a jewellers scales is an essential bit of kit
I had that one and the batteries supplied leaked out when I went to use the other day. I bought weights to check it and it was good across the .01-10g range
Only pita was getting powders onto the plate where I used to use the lid of the ingredient.
I went and bought this one as a change and because it has a weighing lid built in arriving later this week.

Re: 0.01g accuracy scales up to around 200g or 500g
Ok it arrived and out of the box it was out by .02 on 0.5g and .03 on 100g
You can calibrate it at 100 and 300g
After it did that it was .01 on .5g and still .03 on 100g.
I’ll only ever use it for additions so I’m measuring up to 25g max level and so it’s good enough and compact enough for that.

Hmm, interesting, I guess it does make you wonder how accurately machined the calibration weights are too heh.

Absolutely and the calibration weights used to make them

Sorry to bump this thread but can anyone recommend a cheapish set of kitchen scales that read to 0.1g?
Mine only read to 1g and I don't think it'll be that accurate when trying to weigh just 10g of hops.
Though the kitchen is my domain SWMBO needs them to be easy to use too.
Google hasn't thrown up much so far so I thought I'd try here for your ideas.

Not kitchen scales, search eBay for jewellery scales - as used by drug dealers everywhere. I have a set I use for weighing out gypsum and hops. The base is small so I put a suitable size glass on first and reset to zero before weighing out chemicals (shot glass) or hops (pint glass). Mine are meant to be accurate to 0.1g, max weight 500g.Doreblade wrote: ↑Tue Aug 18, 2020 5:43 pmSorry to bump this thread but can anyone recommend a cheapish set of kitchen scales that read to 0.1g?

Expect to pay around a fiver and tell SWMBO hands off, she can find her own
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

When it comes to hops, quite frankly 10g difference is hard to detect. Salts are obviously a little more sensitive but 0.01! Can you really detect such small differences? Now, if you're really dealing drugs.................... Fair enough.

Thanks @vacant and @Orlando
Your comments made me chuckle too.
@Orlando - I hope you're right and that 11g as opposed to 10g shouldn't be noticeable in a 30l boil/hopstand etc.
@Vacant - my dad was a Sheffield copper a food few years ago and once brought back some scales from a drug bust. I used them for several years at liverpool university for proper cooking (I love cooking food as well). Binned them years ago - they'd be right useful now but that's hindsight...

Re: 0.01g accuracy scales up to around 200g or 500g
The perception of bitterness is the main point. There is quite a variation on the population anway but a difference up to 10 IBU's could fool most people. With a hop stand/whirlpool it is of course more about aroma but again a gram or two variance from the recipe would be very dificult for any untrained individual to detect.
