Post by Mjr6313 » Mon Apr 29, 2019 8:31 pm

Last night was his 1st attempt at brewing and its been 24hrs still no action at the airlock I don't want to disharten him can i just pitch some more yeast and hope for the best.
My wife wanted me to get a hobby now I make beer. She says I'm always in my shed I KEEP TELLING HER IT WAS HER IDEA.

Aouto Corectd, Wilkos Cerveza! :D
I know you boys (or Girls) are new brewers, but have you read the destructions?
Does it say to add white sugar?
1Kg Brewing sugar, yes at a push. (never used it).
1Kg DME, (Dried Malt Extract). Light, Medium or Dark, you choose.
Obviously don`t use DME and Brewing sugar together.
16deg seems a bit low to me, you should aim for 20 - 22deg for the yeast.
Put the FV in a warmer place, 20 -22 deg, if still no activity, yes, try another yeast pack.
Please, please read more threads on the `Kit Brewing` section before you start a Brew.
Before you start a Brew, tell us what you are going to do, we will hold your hand right through to the end! :D

I BIAB, its been a while since doing a kit and I thought the yeast would start a bit quicker, I think the problem is the lid is bow outwards in the middle but the air lock is to one side so not bubbling as per other fermenter.
Tin says sugar or dme but no amount and it didn't come with instructions I have brewed lagers before and lower temps are usually best to prevent off flavours.16oC is the warmest room I have till my boiler is fixed then rising to 20oC if needed.

Seems to be going well. getting new hydromiter tomorrow so I can check its steady in a few days still not bubbling well but defiantly signs of internal pressure.

Hello Mjr i hope it comes good.
:-k Hello WA.I noticed advice you gave there about not using DME and sugar together.
After 6 years of brewing myself i am still asking the question why not?
I know theres a chemical difference between maltose and dextrose and yeasts perform differently with the two.
I`ve watched a few videos on youtube where the two are used together and i myself once used the two together.
The only glitch i found was the FG was 1.012 instead of the usual 1.010 but the beer looked good tasted good and had great retention.
Enlighten me WA.I`m still learning after 6 years on the dark side

Wainie,
I don`t know why I said that.
I will now enlighten you.
I have read that there is a problem getting the Flux Capacitor up to 88Gigajoules when
the two are used together, thus lowering the performance on my tumble drier. #-o

Update: fermentation lasted a total 5 days
Mate went to get replacement hydromiter came back with wine thermometer so round of applause for him.
Going leave it a couple more days just in case but looks ok then bottle and will update with weather he managed to succeed with his first steps into brewing beer.
