Oak aging?
Oak aging?
Has anyone bought any oak sticks from here, out of interest:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Oak-Sticks-f ... 2044014602
I'm wondering how well they'd work in beer. They seem to also sell cubes, or sticks with cuts in.

Chris, subscribe to Brulosophy podcasts, they did one on this subject. Quite possibly on their website, too.

Dry Hopped them for a week on day 7 of fermentation. It was BLM!

Re: Oak aging?
I've been useing some Jack daniels oak chips for a few years that are sold for BBQ's. They are chipped jack daniels barrels 100% oak no aditives to assist burning.
I use them to age rum and whisky, but have also used them with some of my beers.
As they are very spirit soaked they are well sanitized. Up to a month in secondary and they are very good.
Every couple of years I dry them and take a blow torch to them, to add a bit more char to the oak.

£8 for 1Kg

I racked a gallon of Belgian Dark Strong Ale onto some of these...
Charcoal Companion Port Soaked Wood Chips / 88.5 cu.in, Brown, 7.59x13.31x24.21 cm https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00U1GIEMY/ ... aDbD8KM580
Wish I'd done the whole 5 gallon batch, twas lovely.

Sounds good, there's a Belgian quad recipe, I've been wanting to try for a while too.
Re: Oak aging?
I ended up getting some oak cubes from - https://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product ... hunks-500g
Just wondering if anyone has used those particular ones, and has advice re. how much to use and for roughly how long?
I have a stainless mesh to put the cubes in and just ordered a lid with a hook to attach it to.

Oooh cool!
We've got a damson tree, but most of the damsons have gone into gin. I wanted to pick more which are all very high up
and bought https://www.raymears.com/Bushcraft_Prod ... ry-Picker/ and lashed to a rod, but that
didn't work too well heh.

Use the entire bag. Four weeks in secondary should be plenty. I used the rum cask chips in a Smoked Baltic Porter a while back and it was excellent.

Re: Oak aging?
Another question on oak aging, I have an actual barrel that was given as a gift.
It is new, so I'm expecting to get a lot of oak flavour.
Firstly is there anything I should be doing to it before putting a 16% barley wine in there, to hang out for a bit? Besides the obvious making sure it is watertight first? How long roughly should I leave it before taking a sample.
Thanks

Re: Oak aging?
You might also want to read the Malt Miller blog, where the Beer Boars club made a stout and split the batch, aging one with chunks of bourbon barrel, one with Provoak pellets and one with an oak flavouring:
