Asda Smart Price Thin Bleach dilution help

Post by Walrus81 » Thu Sep 26, 2019 8:45 am

I'm looking to make a no rinse solution using thin bleach and vinegar.

I've had a read around but am stumped as to how much bleach and vinegar I need.

Bottle states available chlorine as 0.80g/100g.

Contains amongst other ingredients Sodium Hypochlorite.

Thanks

I use bleach and vinegar too.

3.8 litres water
1 level tablespoon vinegar
1 level tablespoon bleach

Mixing raw bleach and vinegar creates chlorine so add them into the water, rather than measuring them out and then adding the water into them easy peasy and super cheap.

Thanks

I assume this is a no rinse dilution?

I got the instructions from this link...

http://howtobrew.com/book/section-1/bre ... -equipment

Where is says “The cheapest and most readily available sanitizing solution is made by adding 1 tablespoon of bleach to 1 gallon of water (4 ml per liter). Let the items soak for 20 minutes, and then drain. Rinsing is supposedly not necessary at this concentration, but many brewers, myself included, rinse with some boiled water anyway to be sure of no off-flavors from the chlorine.”

I don’t rinse and I’ve never had any issues at all.

Keep in mind that the fixed quantities you see around the net for acidifying diluted bleach are just rules of thumb, they don't actually work for all water. Vinegar is 'fairly' safe but also fairly wussy, so in some cases may not get the pH down to less than 5.0 as required (in fact I understand it may even confound the process by creating an acetate buffer). So the quantities people need will vary and there are limits even then, so using RO/DI water or first reducing alkalinity with inorganic acid may be necessary for some people.

Similarly, the specific strength of bleach isn't always quoted (sometimes just less than or more than) and own brands can change from time to time. I believe something like 80ppm chlorine is wanted if acidified, so typically about 1.8ml per litre (for ~4.5% stuff) up to 8ml/L (for 1% stuff) might be needed which is a fair range.

IMO this seems to leave room for mistakes and there is also room for argument over it being okay not to rinse. Personally I would rinse anyway, and so in many/most cases have reverted to just using a simple, strong rate of bleach alone.

And you can get around a lot of this variability by buying in some supermarket water with low minerality/alkalinity/buffering.

Tesco Ashbeck still good in this regard.

Thats good to know, and if you've a local aquatics supplier then RO can work out extremely cheaply too. Though not something I wish to do for larger amounts, just due to the effort involved.

ok

so I have some Ashbeck. I'll use an 8ml/L with 8ml/L of vinegar solution and rinse with boiling water.

Thanks.
