Starsan Discontinued ?

Post by minesapint » Sat Sep 28, 2019 8:27 pm

I have just read an advertising email from a UK home Brewing Shop.
It tells me that Starsan has been discontinued in Europe due to problems with some of the ingredients. The email then goes on to recommend an alternative that they are now stocking.

Does any one know what the problems are supposed to be with Starsan, or could it be the European Officialdom being a bit too protective?

Cheers all.

If true, that's a real shame. It's good stuff.

What's the alternative they're recommending?

Hello Jim.
"Panic over." Not fully over.

We may have a good substitute available to us, but what was the unacceptable ingredient ?

How does it affect us physically ?

More importantly, will it see us off before our poor battered livers give out ?

I have been going around the internet looking for any information, but none is forthcoming.

I doubt a niche product like Starsan being withdrawn will hit the headlines, so we may never find out the cause.

Cheers.

BrewUK is putting about a Star San clone called "Chemsan" (https://www.brewuk.co.uk/chem-100.html), also based on phosphoric acid.

I doubt any of listed the ingredients in Star San got it banned. More likely the traceability of the ingredients has fallen under suspicion?

(EDIT: Oops, didn't notice "Kevwaller" already mentioned this "Chemsan").

Try ‘milk stone remover’ from agricultural shop ( phosphoric acid dilute to 2% or less) ... you may have to buy 20 litres but only about £20 . Mole valley sell it in south west

"Milk stone remover" … now that was an eye opener! There appears to be a whole world of weird and wonderful (and very cheap!) "sanitisers" out there of which "San Star" is a very small tip of the iceberg.

I'd just go back to Videne Antiseptic Solution. I only switched to Starsan last time for a change. Price for either isn't an issue as a tiny amount is used in a brew or bottling session.

Videne is also no-rinse, see this post.

Starsan Discontinued ?

Yes, but that comes with its own issues of proper storage etc. Not a problem for some that I know who use it but there are some less careful.

It's an issue with labelling that doesn't comply to EU REACH regulations.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.
