Brew Dog Cybernaut Mash at 0 degrees C?!
Hi fellow brewsters
I’ve been looking at trying a Cybernaut clone but on inspection of the DIY recipe released by BrewDog, the mash temperature is listed as 0 degrees C for 15 minutes!!!!!!!
Anyone out there got any info on this ludicrous mash schedule??

I think it's probably intentional because the hopping schedule is also as vague as vague can be!

Re: Brew Dog Cybernaut Mash at 0 degrees C?!
"Cold Extraction" (or "mashing" if they must) has become a geeky "technique" recently. But is really an "extraction" which needs heating to mashing temperature (without grain) to convert the starch "emulsion". And the extraction needs overnight or 1-2 hours recirculated, not 15 minutes. And when it comes to boiling all the extracted proteins start sticking to the element potentially resulting in burnt flavour (if you avoid burning out the element).
Dodgy. Most probably is a typo. I do use the technique but would only risk it for low alcohol beers (i.e. minimal grain bill). It extracts nearly everything except the potential sugar (as starch) - only about 25-40% of fermentables extracted.

Re: Brew Dog Cybernaut Mash at 0 degrees C?!
I've just looked this one up. It really does mean 0C 'cos it also has 32F alongside.
So it really, really, is dodgy! Insufficient detail too perform a "cold extraction" and the details they do give would be incorrect. And - you'll probably burnout your boiler's element attempting it!
I'd roughly estimate the OG to be 1.020-5. So that ain't right either.

If you want to catch up with "cold mashing" it's discussed from here onwards: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=81739&start=15#p843589.
The thread is all "low alcohol" brewing, but it covers the "cold mashing" stuff quite extensively.

Re: Brew Dog Cybernaut Mash at 0 degrees C?!
I go back on my "cold mash" explanation.
If Brewdog were playing with "cold mashing" I think we'd have heard about it? I cannot find anything that would link "Cybernaut" with cold mashing. So I now think it is a typo! My guess is some sort of template is used to create these recipe sheets, so temperature is entered just once and the template converts it to other units (e.g. zero is input, and both 0C and 32F appears on the sheet).
So mash at 66C and ignore the 0C. At least the calculated OG makes more sense this way. But for the FG to make sense too, perhaps 1hr of mashing is in order? Unfortunately this sort of tweaking is quite the norm for DIYDog recipes!

Re: Brew Dog Cybernaut Mash at 0 degrees C?!
I guess these recipes are not typed up by a brewer therefore leading to mistakes.
Just had a look at the "Get Out Claus" recipe which states 1 gram of Columbus to give 25 IBUs!
Maybe the Cybernaut mash temp is 70C.
