SS Brewtech Thread Size

Post by StrontiumDog » Wed Dec 18, 2019 8:17 pm

Hi all,

Been searching all over the place but can't figure this out.

Anyone know the standard thread size for these parts?

https://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product ... cking-arm/

https://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product ... hermowell/

https://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product ... f-and-prv/

They all have the same thread and I want to convert the 3" TC standard lid that comes with the BME for a CIP system. I've got a spray ball already with 1/2" female thread and figured I'd just get a reduced but I don't know what size I need (tried B&Q with no luck).

Any help appreciated.

I’ll have a look tomorrow if I remember. I would guess 3/8th NPT.

I think they are all NPT, but you can use BSP fittings with PTFE tape. Which is fine for CIP applications certainly but not something I would like to seal a fermenter with

You might find the adapters on Aliexpress but you biggest problem will be with the sprayball itself. If it is a rotating one try it first attached to a mains pressure feed and if it works I will be amazed. The fixed head type work much better.

Just to mention, BSP and NPT are not compatible in most sizes; if the size is 3/8" nominal bore as Lee suggested then the correct type should be used. If they're 1/2" (or also, I think, 3/4") then the threads per inch happen to coincide, so only for these sizes NPT and BSP can sometimes be mixed in low pressure, non-critical applications (in some cases with extra sealing needed).

I’ll check in 10 mins!

I’ve managed to seal 1/2 BSP NPT together with liquid pipe sealant. The threads don’t go in all the way but I’ve not had any issues on my rig over the years.

Thanks so much everyone! I'll give the 3/8 a go, it's for the CIP so doesn't need to be perfect.

Incidentally, mine is a fixed head I've been using it on the fernentasaurus via a 3D printed disk, worked a treat using a submersible pump in a builders bucket

Indeed. Though if the thread is 3/8" BSP as Lee found then still try to get 3/8" BSP parts to fit it; NPT isn't compatible in this size ('even' as a fudge) and may only go on a turn or so. Shouldn't be a problem as BSP is easier to get over here anyway, though watch out for chinese sellers who don't say which they're offering.

For info this page details the differences between NPT and BSP. As you can see from the chart on that page, only 1/2" and 3/4" are common in both threads per inch and diameter (though they still have different thread shapes):

Of course!

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3308076

I'm lucky to have a friend with a 3D printer.

It works a charm on the FS, same size as the SS Chronical BME 3" TC opening but when I try to secure it with the TC, even gently, I can hear it crunching under the pressure. Shame really as it's ideal otherwise!

Why not just ask Rob at The Malt Miller? Seriously helpful company.
