Re: summer lightning yeast
I brewed with summer lightning dregs last year and made some nice beers.
If you manage to reculture some yeast on just sugar, then they will be lazy yeast. When you try to brew with it then they will struggle to ferment malt and can burn out early.
You might have more luck with spraymalt. The sg is important too. Dilute to 1035 - 1040 SG, not too strong to get the yeast established. This is about 100g in 1L. Cooled boiled water could be the main problem as it contains no oxygen. Oxygen is important for yeast growth too. Give it a good shake 3 or 4 times a day.
The other thing is to build it up slowly every 3 or 4 days. First 50ml, then 0.5L, then 2-3L before pitching the yeast that has dropped out in to a five gallon brew.

Re: summer lightning yeast
Is it still possible to buy Summer Lightning which is bottle conditioned in order to obtain the yeast?
I've only found bright beer in their bottles.

When I looked last year I could only find filtered bottles too.
