In the back of my mind I seem to recall that while Maxim had those rights, initially they were unable to produce a decent beer using the original recipe, ingredients and yeast and were looking to find another who might care to take on that project. Now they produce the beer and advise it is done following a unique process.
It appears the yeast (Sheffield from Brewlabs) is the key player in the sulphur aroma and have heard that early fermentation should be controlled by starting from a lower than normal temperature and without full oxygenation. Thus it does appear that distinctive sulphur smell will be hard to recreate.
Without patience, life becomes difficult and the sooner it's finished, the better.

What other 'qualities' can be bestowed on commercial beer and still deemed saleable.

Having drunk many many pints of it (my first ever pint of beer in a pub wa Waaahhrds) I can confirm no sarcasm there. That’s just how I remember it….
Wife’s uncle described it has fighting beer….
Once inside it fights to get out yer rear end.
Think it was around 4.5% if correct so it had a bit of oomph to it…
