Steam Beer

Post by Chris The Fish » Wed Aug 22, 2007 11:01 pm

Im after making a steam beer from a kit, using a good ale kit, but then adding lager yeast (saflager) instead of the usual ale yeast.

now i know that if your making a lager you need to ferment at lower temps <12deg, but will the lager yeast still work at room temps (18-20deg)?

and has anyone done this with before with a can kit? if so, any tips?

As far as i know the lager yeast will work quite happily at that temp, however it may be a bit on the fruity side especially as you are using saflager which is supposed to be a bit on the fruity side as far as lager yeasts go.
I haven't made a clone of steam beer but i have used the steam beer yeast (whitelabs) when making a lager (before i had the capabilities to ferment cool), although it was fermented at about 16 C it still retained that lager crispness you would expect, im not sure saflager will do the same.

I still have some of the steam beer yeast in the fridge if you want i could send you some and you could try growing up a starter :D

may take you up on that! :D

so if i get a steam beer yeast i could make a more successful 'clone' of sorts, or use the saflager and get a fruitier lager type beer?

which doesnt sound too bad!

maybe i need to do some reading.
