You'll have to keep us posted on how accurate this clone is as OP is a winter warmer favourite of mine.

How are you finding the double brewday?

I'll do a side-by-side when its ready and let you know 8)

12 1/2 hours and counting - feeling pretty knackered now, just had an emergency tea & toast break.

Just waiting for the wort to drop those aching slow last few °c before I can pitch the yeast...

Approaching the 15hr mark  but it'll all be worth it in the end

Yeast pitched in the Old Peculier, got 23l of 1064 so that should be nice come christmas. Already seeing activity in the Brewer's Gold.
Now for the clean-up, it will have been 16.5 hours all in... not sure I'll be doing it again in a hurry :)

A nice days work there.
I am also looking forward to how the Old Pec works out.
My brothers are big fans of the bottled version. I have never had the good fortune to get it on cask. Has Old Pec lost some strenght in the last decade of so? Isn't it 5.5% now?

Yeah it did end up being quite a long day in the end, if I hadn't had mash liquor temp issues with the second batch it would have been considerably shorter. Worth doing though, it looks like the brewer's gold is slowing right down already and the OP had climbed out of the fermenter and onto the floor this morning, never had that before

I'm not sure if OP has lessened in strength over the years (most beers seem to have), the OG of the recipe is 1058, so mine isn't ludicrously over-strength and well, its gonna be for christmas innit!

Will report back when they're ready 8)

Nice one SW 8)

A long day indeed, but I imagine you learned a lot about batch sparging, and doing a double

Well I've kegged and bottled both beers after a week in the primary and the first results are in...

The Brewer's Gold-alike is absolutely nothing-alike! Its very malty with not a lot in the way of hop flavour or aroma, although what bitterness is there is nicely smooth. The whole bittering hops as a big late addition doesn't seem to have been all that effective. I made a similar tasting beer earlier in the year which got left aside in favour of the others I had on. When they ran out I went back to it and it had improved somewhat so I'm going to forget about this one for a while and see if things have balanced out at all in the keg. This project is going on hold for a while but next time I'm going to do a more traditional bittering addition with the bigger flavour and aroma additions a la Styrian Stunner (including a little cascade methinks) to see if I can get closer to the original.

The Old Peculier is a different story altogether! Tastes really well balanced between malt, hop, roast and a little vinous taste in the mouth, with just the right amount of goldings flavour and aroma left with a bitterness that seems, well, just right. It went down to 1012 so ended up at 6.85% Looking forward to breaking into this one in a couple of months time.

A porter / Durden Park tomorrow 8)

Well well well, results after 10 days are somewhat surprising... yes P2, my resolve crumbled last night and I tapped the Brewer's Gold.

My 'nothing like' has now become 'quite a bit like' 8). The hops are coming right through now, it has a good level of bitterness and very much a BG taste to it. What I thought might have been a late addition of cascade in the original is definitely only brewer's gold hops - this beer has that slight citrussy edge in the aroma. The malt is quite pronounced at the front but so alas this might need a little more time for everything to ripen a bit more but this is looking like it'll be pretty good in the end.
