Attempting my first all grain today, mash started at 9.15. Will try and update through the day. Recipe taken from Marc Ollosson book, Pen y Bont bitter but have scaled it down to 19l.

Pale malt 3300g
Crystal 66g
Challenger hops 68g
Challenger hops 13g

Hope that looks ok to your educated eyes :?

Anyway going to check my mash at midway point.

68g does seem quite a lot of Challenger.

In the book the hops are listed as 6.2, the hops i have are 5.6%

That's quite low alpha for Challenger but I still reckon that beer's going to turn out rather bitter. I would have though nearer 40-45g would give a more balanced beer.

Ok cheers will go for 45g

68g would give about 50IBU whereas 45g gives 33IBU. The rest of the recipe looks fairly low gravity so 33IBU should be enough....

EDIT: I used DaaBs calculator with 25% utilisation.

Well 66grms will give you IBU's in the high 50's.
What are the IBU's that are listed in Marcs book for this recipe?

Oh and good luck today, enjoy it.

[edit]what they said above

Welcome to the Dark Side 8) You should end up with a tasty brew with all those Challengers, they're definately one of my favourite hops.
