Homebrewing A Love & Hate Relationship

Post by RabMaxwell » Sat Sep 29, 2007 1:16 pm

I have been brewing now for about 18 years i love the hobby but it sure knocks the crap out of me. On brew day i get my mash & HLT water on heating up. Then i start crushing my grain my eyes start streaming along with my nose. When it comes to mixing the grain into the mash tun it only gets worse it starts to get better until i start weighing my hops. I think i must be allergic to almost everything in home brewing except the yeast. The last 2 days i have gone through over 40kg grain & 1.200g of hops & it's been hell but this will last a while. Is there anyone else out there suffering for there art Cheers got to go & blow my nose again

Dude you need to employ a helper to do all the dirty work

Sadly the only helpers i can attract are ones willing to help with the finished product.

I only buy grain once a year from maltsters as i am a tight arse scotsman.I know if i keep it whole & crush when needed it will still be in good order even after a year

This may seem like a dumb suggestion, but have you thought of wearing a dust mask, until your boil is underway? Along with some safety specks to minimise any dust and stuff getting to you.

Prodigal2 i was just saying to the wife that i was going to give that a go although i am doubtful if it will work. I am also a keen trout angler & in the height of the pollen season it murders me also

Theres nothing better than chopping a load of strong onions and being able to see where your fingers are whilst weilding a sharp knife

Does a a antihistamine give you any relief from the hay fever? It may be worth dosing up and masking up(there are varing grades of masks out there now) at worst case senario this may just make it not as bad as normal

Could be your dripping nose that gives your brews that certain "je ne sais quoi" ;)
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

I have a reaction to certain beers, but I'm not sure why.
I'll drink a few pints and within the hour my stomach will become bloated to the point where it really hurts...we're talking serious cramps, the sort that make you double over in pain

Never have managed to find out what it is. It happened to me with my latest Broadsword brew and there's nothing unusual in that brew :?
