What is your favourite hop?
Re: What is your favourite hop?
I have many favourate hops but from diffrent countries.American hops i have just bought and used simcoe and chinook so far iam very imressed with both it's a little early to say if these are my favourate hops from the us, however my favorate hops from the us so far are Amarillo,Willemette and my top favorate is Crystal that is one sexy hop but iam planning on buying Galena for my irish stout and stouts/dark ales in genral.I have real real soft spot for new zealand hops i think some these hops far out weigh in my mind some of the English/us and even the noble hops from europe, new zealand hops are deep in fruits but with good bittering qualitys my favorate hops are get ready Nelson sauvin, Mouteka,Pecific gem,Rakau/Riwaka i have yet to try Green bullet. My Favorate English hops are Challenger,East kent goldings,Progresss,Fuggles, North down for my dark ales and i have just bought some Boadaciea to try i also use Bobek for some of my bitters with great sucess.Wich one of the styriene goldings give a vanilla type aroma i think it's the one from new zealand but iam not sure. Iam looking to try some wostchire goldings to see what the diffrence is between EK goldings and Wos goldings.

I know that it's a bit boring, but I have to say that out of the American hops that I've tried, my far and away favourite is Cascade..
Re: What is your favourite hop?
for dark ales and stouts I'm loving good old fuggles at the moment.
pale ales it's got to be cascade and northern brewer!

Going back to the Styrians. The styrians I've been using are 'yer actual Styrian Goldings' - not a Styrian-like. I know that they're like rocking horse crap over here but Brouwland have them. Bloody nice they are too.
Re: What is your favourite hop?
I have bought some East kent goldings today from bru paks and i was shocked!

Used to be fuggles and goldings for me, a bit old school. I do really like the NZ hops too. Nelsons were good and I suspect that Riwaka are soon to top the list from there. Centennials if I'm going for US hops. I don't use german hops much and when I do they go in hefeweizen so the hops don't really make an impression.

The local brewery makes a couple of low and mid gravity pales with Amarillo.....they are superb.
For home brewing; with what I've used, I think that Challenger is a great 'blender' and I love late Styrians.
If I had to choose, it would be Styrians at the moment.

What i find weird about Riwaka is a baught hop last year called Rakau with is another new zealand hop, i was told when i bought Rakau is Riwaka just a diffrent name yet when i looked up Rakau it has a compleatly diffrent flavour profile to Riwaka.Iam looking to buy some Pacafica hop from new zealand i like the sound of the orange marmalade aroma that you are supposed to get when it's added late in the boil i think this aroma would work real well in a honey beer or evan a good ginger ale.

Going through a cascade phase again. How do I perceive the flavour? Raw, harsh and green when young. After about three weeks it mellows and becomes more familiar: lychee, fruit salad, floral.
Styrians are a favourite too, don't get any soap from it, when it's young it's grapefruity and a bit harsh then mellows to become more lemony.
Went through an Aurora phase last year which have an amazing tropical flavour and is ready to drink when young. Great for a summer session blonde ale.
Saaz is always a favourite and again tastes terrible when young, like overripe fruit, then mellows to become spicy/earthy. Unbeatable for lagers.
I feel a Chinook phase coming on, never really experimented with this hop.

Hi everyone i bought some Chinook a while ago and i was very impressed with this hop, it has a punchy grape fruit taste yet when added late in the boil you get a smokey type aroma wich is very unsual yet pleasing.I did this test a learned this year to get the true flavour of the hop in question and that test is take a few chinook flowers into a mug and pour some boiling water over the flowers leave it to stand for a while and the smell and taste the liquid, what i got was a intense grape fruit flavour that almost blew me off my feet with a real smokey finish this test is simple but very affective.I was also very surprised on how verstile chinook is you can use it in I.P.A or in darker types of ales ie stouts ect.I beleive that you must experment with diffrent hops this in turn can give you more experience and a real edge in compitions.I think they is alot of bigger real ale breweries only use East kent goldings, fuggles, challenger for everything for example alot of the badger ales i think taste more or less the same, this is my opion.Badger ales are fantastic but they are to me alot a like.
