I have finally got around to doing a back-to-back comparison with a bottled Hobgoblin.

Image

My clone is on the right.

The colour is not too far wrong, perhaps a little lighter and not quite so red.

The smell is similar, but missing a bit of the burnt aroma - a little more chocolate malt to the recipe would fix that.

Unfortunately I am not comparing against draught Hobgoblin. The bottled beer is way too fizzy and straight out of my beer fridge at 10C. My clone is near the end of the barrel so is lacking in CO2 and is much warmer at 18C. This makes comparison very difficult.

However, I would say the underlying taste is very similar. My clone is probably closer to draught Hobgoblin that the real thing bottled :) but due to the current poor condition of my clone the bottled beer is better at the moment :(
