Boingy is totally spot on abt the current apa and aipa scene. It's like a competition on who can pack more hops in the beer. I mean some of the hop schedule is just confusing and exaggerated with so many different hops in a single brew and different blends at different additions. Boy are they expensive to brew!!!!
To me the Germans are good for being consistent, the Americans are good at pushing the envelope, but the British seem to make the most balanced beer. Maybe balanced isn't the best best word, but they have seem to master the art of drinkability. Maybe not so much of balance, given it's a little conservative on the hops and tilted towered the malt side, such that some may think it's boring and bland.
I like to ask where are most of your hops added? Try adding most of it from the last 20 mins onwards as that's the practice for really hoppy and aromatic apa.
Oh i the hop/malt ratio on beersmith to give me an idea of how the balanced a beer will be. On the other hand, these are
Still just estimates. I used to get overly bitter beer, and realized that I take too long to cool the wort and the late addition hops are still isomerising.
