You know what, pdntc, I am going to use this combination more in the future!

Okay: An Update

Both beer's are in their respective barrels, even though I committed 6 to bottles for later drinking (thinking ahead to Xmas Day!).

First off, the lager malted beer with the shredded wheat, unroasted oats and basmati rice. This is a brew with Saaz, mandarin zest, cardamon and coriander. The beer is a lovely pale gold in colour, and the mouth feel is smooth and silky. The flavour is bursting with fruit and zesty flavours and is wonderful in its complexity, with a gentle bitterness that leaves the pallet clear after each mouthful (I've taken to sipping it like a ponce, eyes closed, etc - sad, I know, but there you go). It started just over 1.050/52 and dropped to 1.010. I love this beer and every mouthful is a delight. I really hope I can make this again.

Second off, the darker beer, with the roasted oats. The beer has a wonderfully dark colour, almost like a brown ale. The taste is complex and rich, almost boarding on the dark/roasted flavours found in a porter. Again,it has a smooth mouth feel and a clean bitterness that doesn't suck your face in, leaving the pallet fresh for the next mouthfull. It started at just over 1.052 and dropped to 1.010/08, so I thought it would be a bit thin, but it's not by a long shot. Wow, this is a beer that if I had it at a beer ex I would be tempted to have another one. The rich malty (and, I suppose, oaty) sweetness is balanced by the EKG hops. I'm not blowing my own trumpet as I am totally surprised at how this has come out. Yes, it was an experiment, and it has worked. Will I do this again, most certainly.

What a great hobby, eh? I hope you all have as much fun as I do doing this, and also experiment with ingredients. What am I saying, of course you do! I've seen all the posts! Why do you think I felt able to do this in the first place? Because of this forum, that's why. Thanks guys.

Best,

Dave.
Currently Drinking: Marris Otter with home roasted porridge oats, shredded wheat, crystal and black malt, EKG hops and Nottingham yeast. Smooth, dark, and rich - put some aside for Xmas.
Currently Drinking: Bohemian Pilsner with porridge oats, shredded wheat and basmati rice, along with Saaz hops, mandarin zest, coriander, cardamon pods and Munich yeast. Silky on the mouth with a wonderful summer taste. Love this brew!
