Personally, I wouldn't risk it. Fermenters aren't generally designed to take the heat. I brew indoors, and 30 litres of beer spilt on the floor would probably mean I ended up living alone (whether it was boiling or not). And I don't like the idea of 3rd degree scalds on my feet and legs...Just a question, could a normal bulk standard 30 liter fv be used as a boiler if the kettle elements were fitted?
Thanks and sorry for the hijack of thread.

If it's made of Polyprop' and most of them are it'll be fine

I'm about to make at least one (might make a 30L one as a test, then go for a 200L one) of these boilers, so these threads have been very useful - thanks all...
I'd just like to add that I'll be boiling in the kitchen (same as everyone else), but wearing wellies all the time - that way if the thing does melt I should be insulated from burns or electric shocks - I reckon it's the way to go..

I boil my trusty Thunderbird in my first floor flat. The guy below is BIG. I'd hate to have him knock on my door covered in wort.
These are fine seriously. I've never had any problems.

Bump a cracking thread.
Huge thanks to all those who have shared this cracking idea and with great picture detail on how to build.
Got one exactly like the Thunderbird. After looking on ebay for one i just called in at the first curry house i passed on my way home. 2mins later i was walking out with one in hand!! From now on they will be getting all my Dhansk orders!
Will try and post some pictures of how the build goes.
Then planning to fire it up for my first ever brew, going to jump straight in with a Malt Extract TT Landlord from GW's Book. I've been rearching on here and reading that book from cover to cover for 2months...i reckon i'm ready!

and well done on the free chutney container! Once you've got one up and working you'll soon be craving more......they make excellent fermenters and a HLT wouldn't half come in handy in a few extracts time.....!
