Fitting a dial thermometer to boiler

Curious why you think the threaded tank connector wouldn't work, before I go ahead and order one. Fit the tank connector to the pot as normal and I would have thought that the pocket would just screw straight into the 1/2" female thread - job done?

Normally a tank connector wouldn't have a female thread. It does indeed look like you could screw the thermo-pocket straight into the end of the tank connecter, but it's hard to be sure from the photo. Have you verified this with the seller?

Maybe, but I'd still like something a bit more solid, like the tank connector, as suggested above.

Thats what I was thinking, I looked at a tank connector the other day and it was a no go, but if that one is threaded internally then ..yea should work .

I got some of these but will only be using them in the HLT since the thermowell is brass. Brass is ok for hot water as far as I understand but not considered food safe, particularly in contact with acidic wort. I know brass is zinc and copper so there may be some benefit in fermentation provided by trace amounts of these elements leeching into the wort, but zinc poisoning is a possibility. Also lead is used in some brass mixtures. May have got that wrong, but rather not take the chance.

Afaik the term "suitable for potable water" means the lead level is low enough for food safety, and common water plumbing fittings in the uk are "suitable for potable water" .

Brass fittings designed for gas pipe use may not be "suitable for potable water" ?

Hmmm. Suitable for hot water and suitable for food / wort are not the same, I read this and hence my caution

Ok I finally fitted one these to my pots , for the mash tun I used a brewmometer so I only fitIted them to my hot water tank and boiler. The concern of the brass is not an issue just drop them in white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide solution if it concerns you. You only have to do this once to clean any lead of the surface butt treat it the same as copper.
I drilled a 20mm hole with my cone cuter and used a fiber washer and flanged lock nut to make, a water tight seal there isn't much to play with in the front but ifew you drill a nice hole you don't have a problem.
