I emailed and asked, this is the response for York East 2004 WSZ

Dear Mr Parker

Thank you for your e-mail dated 12 February 2010 regarding the ''total alkalinity''.

The average Alkalinity is 105.7 mg/l CaCO3 (ranging from 64.6 to 163.0) This figure is based on a limited number of samples taken at our water treatment works as it is not a regulatory requirement for Yorkshire Water to monitor it.

Quite a range, time for a Salifert kit I think.

Finally, and typically, they didn't have values for Alkalinity as CaCO3. I emailed them a week ago, and I've been given a "sort of" answer, so better than nothing:

Thank you for your recent email regarding Total Alkalinity as CaCO3.

I have contacted our Water Quality Team and they have run a report which shows an average reading of 14.7 mg/l for Total Alkalinity as CaCO3 coming from Rivelin Water Treatment Works outlet. We do not analyse for this in distribution. Results ranged from 11 to 19.6.

I hope that this information is of use.

Severn Trent didn't include total alkalinity figures for the Derby area, but I just tested it with a Salifert KH/Alk Profi Test according to DaaBs/Chris's instructions - think I did it correctly; it checked out with the check solution anyway, give or take a drop.

Got 2.5meq/L - which I believe is around 125CaCO3. By my calcs then to lose say 100 of those I'm looking at about 0.55ml of CRS per L of water.

Thats today though, no idea how consistant it is, guess time will tell. I have noticed in the past the water suddenly being 'bluer' than normal and there being chemical smells to it that I don't normally detect, so I guess they may change things from time to time if/when they have to.

Hi,

Recently got the 2009 water report for Veolia (formerly Three valleys water). Doesn't include magnesium (which I've asked for seperately, but does include sulphate and alkalinity expressed as HCO3 (for the first time). Request direct from their website and they'll reply within 3 working days.

The mean figure they gave for HCO3 was within 2 points of my calculation from the salifert kit from fleabay, so that gives me plenty of confidence
