Water Analysis at Murphy and sons
Re: Water Analysis at Murphy and sons
Hi,
i have just thawed out loads of snow which gave me 10 litres of what looks like dirty contaminated water. A black scum ring around the bucket and bits of black residue. So I shall not be mashing with snow. It looked brilliant as snow pure and white and that is where it ended.

Like to echo what Fisherman has said. I generally have a Murphy's test done once a year. £15 per year strikes me as good value to keep up with any changes made by the water company. For one thing, the tests and Murphy's recommendations have shown me how inaccurate Graham Wheelers water treatment aid can be.

Only If you are assuming that Murphy's recommendations are 'better' than Grahamschastuck wrote:For one thing, the tests and Murphy's recommendations have shown me how inaccurate Graham Wheelers water treatment aid can be.

I take advantage of Murphys testing service, but apply my own treatments as I am not convinced by a 'One size fits all' approach

Exactly! Murphy's test YOUR water - no one else's - and the results are tailored to your supply.Aleman wrote:Only If you are assuming that Murphy's recommendations are 'better' than Grahamschastuck wrote:For one thing, the tests and Murphy's recommendations have shown me how inaccurate Graham Wheelers water treatment aid can be.

Well.......
The Micro that I work for has its own chalk filtered borehole supply but we still send off samples now and again to Murphy's for analysis and although I only live 10 miles away, I will still be sending a sample away for my own home brewing purposes as my supply is through Yorkshire Water and can at times be from various sources due to this ere "water grid" that operates nowardays.
I tend to think that our water goes to others rather than the other way as ours is also derived from boreholes which is a safe steady supply whatever the time of year so I would set up my treatment based on my usual supply analysis and stick with that, you never quite know what you are on with water grids.

To produce 'ideal' one size fits all water profiles for the beer style!!! Which actually bears little or no resemblance to historical or actual liquors used in brewingchastuck wrote:Exactly! Although boreholes can suffer during long dry periods, when water levels drop. The concentration levels of salts in the water can change enough to affect the flavour of the beer.Steve1262 wrote:Well.......

Re: Water Analysis at Murphy and sons
I have tried many water supplies.
I have been out in my car many years ago to a bore pipe supply in the villiage of Bubbenhall very close to where I live, The water comes out of the wall from a pipe and locals come and use it. When I got my water home and home and boiled it all I could smell was manure, So I ditched that to. Well it is a farming area.
Has anyone got a water report for Severn Trent in the Warwickshire and West Midland area's please?. Severn Trent have blanked my old report so I am stuck.
Cheers

Re: Water Analysis at Murphy and sons
Aleman, we do actually do tailored liquor and mash treatments for all kinds of breweries and brewers. The 'one size fits all' only applies to DWB and AMS.
Most homebrewers only use something like AMS and DWB therefore unless they ask for something more specific our treatments are only based on two additions.
Ask and ye shall receive

Ahhhh . . . That has never been explained before, thanks for the information Paul, I suspect that the next time I have the water analysed, I'll ask for more detailed recomendations.crookedeyeboy wrote:Aleman, we do actually do tailored liquor and mash treatments for all kinds of breweries and brewers. No worries mate, I'm not sure theyll be as in depth as some of the ones on here but I'll help to give you the right kind of idea when changing from stouts to lagers etc
Re: Water Analysis at Murphy and sons
Excellent. I'm doing this very shortly. Do I just put on my letter that I want a 'more in-depth analysis'?crookedeyeboy wrote:No worries mate, I'm not sure theyll be as in depth as some of the ones on here but I'll help to give you the right kind of idea when changing from stouts to lagers etc
Re: Water Analysis at Murphy and sons
Indeed, just let me know what styles of beers you want to make and Ill tailor the recommendation.
