Rescue remedy for my IPA shandy?

Post by scarer » Sun Mar 09, 2008 1:01 pm

I've brewed Coopers IPA and it's been in a cornie keg now for 4 weeks, 1 in the warm and 3 in the cold and it was primed with DME.

The problem I have is that it smells and tastes like shandy! It was the first time I used my cornie keg that I thought I had thoroughly cleaned as it did have some syrup in it when supplied and despite the stripping and cleaning with several lots of boiling water and chemipro over 2 days still smelled a little of lemonade.

However I kegged the Coopers thinking it should be ok. I also have some of the same batch in a polypin which I haven't tried yet and hopefully that will be fine. Plus it will also confirm my suspicions.

The question is how can I rescue the Kegged Coopers? Will adding hops to the keg help or are there any other suggestions?

And also how can I ensure my next brew isn't tainted in my other similar smelling cornie keg which I am due to keg in the coming week?

I'd sniff your seals.

They harbour the strongest syrupy smells in my experience. You can remove them and boil them to reduce the smell, or buy a new set. H&G sell sets for about £3 I think.

If it's just aroma you could dry hop to try and mask it with an ounce or two of something pungent like Cascade or Amarillo.

I think I've got nothing to lose by dry hopping so I'll give that a go.

I've just tried the polypin and theres no hint of lemonade which is what I suspected. Its a bit flat though.

Oh dear, not a success this one. The best kit has been my Colne Valley which i've just finished :(

I've gone on to AG now and I can't wait for my first one to be ready but I will cry if it tastes like shandy again

I'll have a go at boiling the seals this time and i might leave the keg to soak over night with oxiclean then leave it open a day or two to air, then oxiclean it again or maybe idophor.

I think an overnight soak in oxyclean worked for me. Many of mine arrived with some kind of pink sugary syrup still in them and/or green algae :? My seals still have a bit of a pepsi-cola aroma to them but this doesn't seem to affect the beer.

Actually, I got them from Norm and they are *supposed* to be fitted with all new seals........

I reckon iodophor will help with the smell as well as sanitising, as it's pretty pungent? Mine had coke syrup in and some sugary syrup I didn't recognise.

I scrub mine with soda crystals, rinse hot and cold several times, grazing by elbow on that bloody rim, then throw in several litres of iodophor solution and shake it around. I then put all the posts, tubes and seals inside the keg and soak. I then put the keg back together, roll around again, then pressurise and blast a bit of iodophor around the system. I don't rinse at the end.

I'm hoping it's just the one keg because I've bought 5 off him in total but only used the one so far. I'm kegging another tomorrow so I think i will check them all and if it's only one then I can live with it and buy some new seals.

I boiled up some Northdown hops for 15 mins and strained the liquid off and added that to the keg and it seems to have helped, although its rather cloudy now.

I also have some Styrians that I might add for a few days once I can get hold of a muslin bag (again might be tomorrow).

By the way, Is there a mark or some sort of guide as to how high to fill a cornie keg. I've been getting a small amount of beer out of the gas disconnect when I've used my widget cylinder so I think I overfilled it slightly.

I'll give your method a go tomorrow, fingers crossed
