Beersmith grain extract rates

Post by Vossy1 » Sun Apr 13, 2008 10:17 am

I've just been playing with a recipe from a book and I've typed the grain bill into Beersmith.

The OG of the recipe is 1050 but Beersmith is coming out with OG 1058.
I'm assuming that the yield set up for the grain in Beersmith is too high.
Can someone tell me how to change it please?

Cheers

Or the assumed extract efficiency is different. Or the book is wrong.

Thanks DaaB, that's got Beersmith agreeing with my longhand calculations, both coming out at 1054. I assume the original recipe book used different yields to the stock I have.

** I've made a mistake here. The original recipe doesn't have torrefied wheat in it, that's my addition. With it removed it brings the OG down to 1051 which I assume is as close as dammit**

Is there a way of using percentages to formulate a recipe to a desired OG in Beersmith?
The recipe I'm trying is going to be

85% Maris Otter
5% Wheat Malt
5% Torrefied Wheat
5% Carapils malt

** haven't decided whether to scrap one of the wheat additions yet**

I've been using the formula at the bottom of page 30 (1997 second edition) Wheelers Homebrewing, to countercheck Beersmith and it's giving me very different results to Beersmith.

Is this possibly because Beersmith takes into account system losses, as entered by me, for My System?
Is Grahams 'volume brewed' figure the final batch volume or the volume pre boil?

I've just rechecked the figures for the recipe using Grahams formula and when I put those figures into Beersmith the OG is 1050 8)

What I think has been confusing me is that the original recipe is based on a 90,5,5 %age split of grain, whereas using Grahams formula, the differing extract figures give differing amounts of each individual grain.

Shamelessly stolen from another board:
Stuster wrote:Not really, but here's a work around. You can enter the amount of each grain in pounds, so you end up with a 100 pound grain bill for your batch. Then you can use the Gravity function which is up towards the top of the page, between Color and Preview Brew Sheet. Then pick the gravity you want. Beersmith should keep the percentages of the grain the same.
Plugging in your numbers for my system gives me this (5 gallons, 70& efficiency).

Code: Select all

Amount Item Type % or IBU
8 lbs 7.5 oz Pale Malt (2 Row) UK (3.0 SRM) Grain 85.00 %
8.0 oz Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM) Grain 5.00 %
8.0 oz Wheat Malt, Bel (2.0 SRM) Grain 5.00 %
8.0 oz Wheat, Torrified (1.7 SRM) Grain 5.00 %
