Cheap kits?

Post by shr3k » Tue Apr 15, 2008 10:25 pm

ok ive tried my first pint 9 days after being in the keg and it tastes quite nice.

Question is, Its a little cloudy still.

I have the ipa gold in the Fermenting Barrell atm will that be alot different or similar and whats the main differences between the kit. The IPA needed no sugar but had 2 tins. The cheap kit needed a kg of sugar and the tin.

Thanks, Im new to it all.

Welcome to the forum! 8)

The cloudiness will settle, try putting it somewhere cool for a week or two if you can. Is there much fizz in the beer? The CO2 from secondary fermentation (from the priming) seems to help clear the beer down.

You may be perfectly happy with your first brew, but you will find that the two can kit will turn out much closer to a commercially brewed beer. You are making a beer with 100% extract of malted barley, which is effectively what the commercial process does.

Using sugar to make kits up, whilst it provides for the necessary amount of alcohol, leaves the beer a bit thin and wishy washy, and can impart a 'cidery' taste to beer. It's much better to use liquid malt extract or dried malt extract (Spraymalt) as a substitute for the sugar with single can kits. At a pinch, you can also substitute Beer Kit Enhancer, which is half brewing sugar and half Spraymalt.

Given that it was a two can kit (and used no sugar) I would say the IPA will be loads better.

Not brewed from a can for 15yrs, once you've done AG there's no going back, If I was you I'd take the next step to full mash, there's some great recipes out there!!
