A couple of Q's

Post by slycottoncat » Mon Apr 28, 2008 7:12 pm

Just returning to home brewing after a 10 year lay off and I would like to get a few things straight.

1 I have bought a Young's fremjentation bin (the one withthe screw top lid and hole cut in it) and I was thinking that i would like to run a brewing heater througha 'cored' rubber cork and then place the corkin the pre-cut hole. Question is .......... if I screw the lid on, how will the gas escape?

2 I have been given 24 one litre brown bottles that previously contained San Miguel lager, are these strong enough to withstand the pressures of bottling a brew in?

Thanks in advance for the help.

You could use a standard airlock/bung in the original hole and then drill a smaller hole next to it and use a grommet for the heater cable.

The bottles are probably fine as they had beer in them, although as with any glass bottles under pressure, place a heavy towel over them - just in case.

you could use a standard bung with a hole for the lock then carefully drill a second hole for the heater cable ( some heaters come with this supplied ) remember to seal heater cable in with silicone
