Fixby Gold (again)

Post by eddnix » Thu May 08, 2008 9:41 am

The final kit in my ex-kit stash is a fixby gold. I'm thinking of making it up to final volume then boiling it for ten minutes with some cascade. As I find it difficult to throw anything away I was thinking of dry hopping the kit with the supplied hop-bag.

Questions:

Are pellets any good for dry hopping?

Will it be possible to just throw the supplied bag into primary after initial fermentation, or should I pop them in a dry-hopping bag?

Does anyone know what hops are in the bag?

This probably seems a lot of faffing over a kit, but being my last one (unless stuck for time) I really fancy experimenting with what can be done with it.

I dry hop with pellets. They work fine. I don't use a hop bag with them - I find they break up and eventually sink to the bottom of the FV. I wouldn't use them in a corni keg like that though.

Thanks for that steve. It just occurred to me that it probably wouldn't be a good idea to throw an unsanitised hop/tea bag into the brew anyway. I'll go with ripping it open and throwing them straight in.

Or, you could make up as suggested with the mini-boil and teabags steeping for bitterness, then throw the nice chunk of Cascade into your secondary/barrel as your dryhop for aroma.
