Think it will go any lower?

Post by RajBoab » Sat May 31, 2008 9:07 pm

Hi all,

I've had an EDME Irish Stout kit in the FV for 7 days. I made it with a 1.6 kg can of John Bull Dark LME (that I got from EBAY cheap with a £10 voucher) and 1KG of Geordie Brew Kit Enhancer. I used the supplied yeast.

The OG was 1.061. The SG has stayed stable for 3 days at 1.020.

I roused the brew a day ago to see if it would help it get any lower but it hasn't.

Anyone think this will get any lower or is it kegging time?

Cheers, Stuart

Fingers crossed for you but it may not. Perhaps make sure it's warm enough ~20degC. Next kit use separate yeast like an 11g Safale S-04. It gets lauded round here because it really is a good fast worker. 8)

Just had the same stuff in the FV since Monday, using the original yeast and Geordie BKE, but not the John Bull extract. It's on around 1012.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm a bit confused in terms of why using a pack of Safale would help. Is it because there is double the amount of dried yeast compared to the kit's supplied yeast?

I used the supplied yeast and by the next morning there was a huge head on my brew, so it was working fast enough. I thought that whatever yeast was used it would multiply until all the fermentables were used up. Safale, having double the yeast would do it quicker, but would it actually do it better, e.g. ? Ignoring taste profile and floculation etc. Does Safale have the reputation of taking brews to a lower SG than more generic yeasts?

Thanks, Stuart
