Weekend only brewing?

Post by Pritch » Mon Aug 04, 2008 6:46 pm

Hello all,

I've been toying with the idea of home brewing for a while, and just about have the go-ahead to take over a corner of my girlfriend's kitchen to do it in.

Problem is... I'm only at her house Friday evening to first thing Monday; the rest of the time, I stay closer to work. So, the question is, how much work do you need to put in while the stuff is fermenting?

Can I just leave it to its own devices until I get there on the Friday evening, or will bad things happen if I neglect it? If anything does need to be done, can I safely leave it to my girlfriend, a woman whose skills in anything food or drink related stop short of poaching an egg?

Should be just fine. The following week when you return, the fermentation should be complete and you can crack on with the next stage. I usually rack to a secondary at that stage for it to clear before kegging. Just tell your other half not to touch it. :D

as a bonus, if the fermenting beer leaks out of the fermenting bucket (which can happen for vigorous yeast), your girlfriend will have to clean it up.

Hehe, she may well do... but she might just make him pay!

Cheers folks. I might keep the bit about cleaning it up quiet though, and just act surprised if it happens.
