Idea's for my next AG

Post by Madbrewer » Wed Aug 27, 2008 9:57 am

Decisions Decisions Decisions Would anyone like to auggest a hoppy recipe to brew?

No rush, I have about three weeks to decide. But as I like beers on the hoppy side especially ones like Hogs Back's 'Hop' (Hop Garden Gold), FFF's Moondance, FFF's Alton Pride I would like a beer around 4% with the same level of hoppiness as them. And I have the following recipe books to choose from:-

Wheelers Brew your own European Beers at Home,
Wheelers Home Brewing the Camra Guide,
Wheelers Brew your own Real Ale at Home,
Lines BBLTYB,
Papazians New complete joy of home brewing,
The Mark Olloson One
Classic Beer Styles series 'Pale Ale'

Has anyone got any suggestions for me along the lines of 'if you liked them beers you'll love this?' either described as ' try recipe x from book y' or indeed any recipe you may have brewed that you feel meets my 'I want it hoppy' criteria. (Also I seem to have more Golding and Fuggles to use up than anything else so if there's a choice of two beers - feel free to head for the G&F hopped one!)

Thanks in advance

Phil

Do you use any kind of brewing software, eg Brewsmith, Promash etc? They're great for tinkering around with recipes and will work out all the bitterness, colouring for you. I use Brewsmith and it has style guides which gives you guidelines towards where you need to be ingredients wise.

Not sure about Promash but I know Beersmith has a free downloadable trial.

I have beersmith though I need to register it now .. I think, also I have a spreadsheet which has a few formula bugs to iron out but allows me to suggest an IBU and it calulates hop weights and grain bills for me. Last time I tried to do a hop bomb I got a bitter without the explosion of hoppiness I wanted though it was ok really.

When I wrote the post I did think c'mon Phil use your imagination! But the post was for fresh idea's /there maybe be some really cracking beers out there that I never ever tried, (my boss like's Lees for example) and probably never brewed due to not knowing what I was expecting from the final product exactly.

Also as GW's books yielded so many examples of what I like to drink I spent alot of years either brewing his Boddingtons recipe, Pedigree, Castle Eden & Fullers beers also. Or tinkering with 'them' recipes. Then last year I did TEA * 3 & American Pale Ale, couple of lagers and some 'Pale ales' and a stout so I was fresh out of idea's for a pint to copy this time around, (one that's nice and particularly hoppy.)

Am now contemplating starting off with the Wheeler Bod's recipe, and substituting all the hops for hope I actually have at the mo!

Thanks for the reply though wil keep you all posted

Just finnished drinking Felinfoel Double Dragon from BYOBRAH. and used extra hops [only about 10gms more than the recipe]. The result was a very hoppy beer. As its a beer I have made a lot I was suprised how much hoppier the result was.

Now you're taking! Were you happy with it or will you revert back to the 25EBU version?

Sure I will do both at some time because I like both. Mayby tweek it again another way. I bottled 1/2 the last batch, has now been in the bottles 1 month so might try one his weekend. Love opening a bottle of a good hoppy beer hope it has an explosive hop aroma.
