hopinator?

Post by Duncndisorderly » Thu Sep 11, 2008 10:44 am

ive been looking on the net at various hopping devices but they all seem to be pressure fed
Image

i was thinking i might try a diffrent (cheap) method im gonna get a big caffetiere (yes im fascinated by them) put an ounce of hops in then pour in a bottle of ipa, let it sit 2 mins then plunger it down, i reckon for such a short exposure time it shouldnt effect the ibu too much, but it should hopefully give a much hoppier taste, also providing i dont drive the punger down to the bottom i should be alble to repeat this several times over, will this work or have i gone doolallytap
opinions?

This looks like one of those "because I can" bits of equipment.

Could be used in an interesting experiment i.e make a "standard" ale and try it with different hops of differing amounts etc. A good way to find out what you like I suppose

Oh yeah, I build one of those things about 3-4 years ago. I tried it a couple of times at brew club parties and the damn thing plugged up both times. My main problem is that I am not really into supper hoppy beers (which I know sounds strange comming from an American) so I don't feel the need to mess with it that much. From my experience, it's not that using it will make your beers more bitter but you will get massive hop flavor and especially aroma. My understanding is that you will have the best luck with higher alcholol beers theoretically because the extra alcholol extracts the goodies from the raw hops better. Also, you need to brush you teeth after drinking beer from one of these things since small pieces of the hop cones make it through to the glass and you end up looking like you just chowed down at a salad bar. Of couse, in these times of scarcity, this whole idea has been sort of shelved except for those who grow their own hops.
Drinking:Saison (in bottles), Belgian Dubbel (in bottles), Oud Bruin (in bottles), Olde Ale (in bottles),
Abbey Triple (in bottles), Munich Helles, Best Bitter (TT Landlord clone), English IPA
Conditioning: Traditional bock bier, CAP
Fermenting: Munich Dunkel
Next up: Bitter (London Pride like), ESB
So many beers to make, so little time (and cold storage space)

Yeah, I can see the problem of filtering the hops but making several screens of varying sizes should help combat that. I think the main issue (for me anyway) would be the cost of hops. Maybe using pellets or liquid would be a cheaper option

Something to think about anyway.

Anyone have any "how to's" for this? I was thinking of modifying a water filter and maybe using the carbon cartridge to filter the hops

I reckon you might be wise to try just 3 or 4 cones in your coffe percolator with your bottle of IPA - you'd be surprised.

that hopinater thing - good grief
