Woodfords Norfolk question

Post by verno » Mon Dec 01, 2008 2:14 pm

Hi all,

A friend made his first brew at the weekend (I persuaded him to go for it) but it seems he got confused between the two kits he bought (woodfords norfolk and a castlemaine). He added 1kg of table sugar to the woodfords kit even though it was a 2 can kit.

I was speaking to him this morning and said that sounded odd and he just realised he might have got the castlemaine instructions mixed up.

Anyway he was asking what the impact would be. Except for a very strong ABV and maybe a slightly watery or cidery taste I wasn't sure what else to tell him. I also wasn't sure if there is anything he can do about it?

Advise pls.

Seems to me you pretty much nailed it! Based on 3kg of malt and 1kg of table sugar he probably had an OG of 1055 or so. If he actually gets to the suggested FG of 1014 (not gauranteed by any means!) he'll have an ABV of 5.3% which should be interesting! As you hinted, I wouldn't like to vouch for the quality though.

1kg is alot to add to a two can kit, I have added 250g before to make up the OG but it ended up a litle cidery and sharp.

I have a sneaky suspicion though, that it'll be ok and taste just fine.
