Postpunk IPA 2009-01-31
This is my first AG!
I'm using the brew-in-a-bag method for a 10 litre brewlength. The recipe is nice and simple:
2.5kg lager malt
Cascade: lots
You can maybe tell from the name what I'm trying to emulate, but I am well aware that enough will go wrong to ensure that the result will be quite different.
It's not hardcore BIAB because I intended to mash with half the liquor and then batch sparge (with classic BIAB you use all your liquor at once). But: I was going to mash in a stockpot on the stove, so that I could control the temperature of the mash more easily. Unfortunately 2.5kg of grain is more than I thought it would be and it doesn't fit in the pot I was going to use. So at the last minute I had to mash in a spare FV instead. Good job I thought ahead and made my bag nice and big in anticipation of doing bigger batches in the future!
Mashing at this moment and hoping the temperature is correct. There seem to be hot spots and my thermometer reads 62 C one minute and 69 the next!

I've not come across this method before. Hope it turns out nice.
Any chance of a few pics?

Taking pics on my ancient camera as I go and will post them later.
The temperature of my mash seems to have dropped to 62, so I've decocted a bit and boiled it up just for fun. I have no idea what I'm doing. Nearly time for the first runnings now!

First runnings are 1070! I must have done something right!
Batch sparging now ...

Finished sparging (second runnings 1020) and the wort is now heating up to a boil. These hops smell fantastic!
Re: Postpunk IPA 2009-01-31
The wort is cooling in the sink and the stove is covered in burnt-on toffee.
I am an all-grain brewer

Photo hosting sites don't seem to like me, so I put a (very) few pictures on my blog: http://sad-barm.blogspot.com/2009/02/dms-disaster.html
I took a gravity reading tonight and tasted the sample. It's very thick and full-bodied and almost opaque. The hops are not as evident as I thought they would be. There is masses of DMS. I didn't know lager malt had more DMS-causing stuff than other sorts (I do now!). Will this clear up with time or am I stuck with it?
