AG #4 Lager Beer

Post by BrewerBen » Sun Feb 01, 2009 3:13 pm

I cant believe i've done the 4'th algrain already, it's addictive this brewing malarky. For this one i wanted to use up some Perle hops i had left over from the last brew - a wit beer. Since they are used in lager's i thought id have a go at a Lager type brew but without the lagering as i dont have the kit. Not sure how much sense that made but i used the recipe below. It was all done last weekend and ive not had a chance to sort the pic's out until now.

23L Brew Length:
4.00 kg Lager Malt
0.50 kg Wheat Malt
0.25 kg Light Crystal Malt
25.00 gm Pearle [6.90 %] (90 min)
15.00 gm Pearle [6.90 %] (15 min)
15.00 gm Pearle [6.90 %] (Aroma Hop-Steep)
0.50 tsp Irish Moss (Boil 10.0 min)
1 Pkgs SafAle US S-05

Target OG 1.045
Bitterness 27IBU

Grain Bill:

Mashing, last time the temp dropped a fair bit so in an attempt to improve it i used my fleece:
Image

Starting temp was 68C, end temp was 62. I need a better coat:

Batch Sparging:

Spent grains for the compost:

Perle Hops and irish moss for the 90min,15min and steep additions:

Just coming to the boil. It was at this time i realised the hop strainer was still on the worktop:

Transfering to the fermentor after cooling. The flow was good despite no strainer, just had to tip the last litre or 2 out. Collected 21 litre's in all:

1.042 gravity reading, a little off but i can live with that.

A nice lively fermentation. It was all over and down to 1.006 in just a few days, seems faster than the S-04 i used before:

After 7 days i bottled it. Turned out darker that i wanted as i wanted it to look like a lager, too much crystal i guess. Still looks a tasty though:

I'll give it a week and then crack open a bottle and report back.
This is the second brew in a row where ive had the efficiency at around 65%. Any tips on how i can improve this would be appreciated.

A good brewday was had by the looks of things.

Your probably right about the crystal making it look darker - like more of a pale ale than a lager.

The first thing I thought of about your efficiency would be to loose the grain bag. This may allow the sugars to "escape" more easily. Also, why do you use the foil cover when batch sparging? I've seen people use that when fly sparging but batch sparging just requires you to add water and not rinse the grains :?

I suppose you could keep the same efficiency but increase your grain bill to compensate.

A fine looking beer regardless of how you do it :)

I expect thats just so he can return the first runnings without disturbing the grain bed...

Yep thats what i was trying to do. Not sure how effective it is as when i put the first jug or 2 full back in it still just comes out murkey.

Murkey is fine, it's grainy you want to avoid
