Nutrient?

Is yeast nutrient a waste of money? I seem to remember C J J Berry said that there is no better environment for yeast than wort, and that it has absolutely everything yeast could possibly want. Is that so?

And what about adjusting the pH of the wort? Is that significant?

There have been a number of issues with stuck fermentation with some Muntons/Woodfordes kits where a tsp of nutrient can help prevent this happening. This won't be a problem with kits which require sugar or ag brews.

When it comes to beer, take CJJ Berry's books with a large pinch of salt. Far better to ask/browse on these forums.

I no longer have any books, but once owned Berry and 'Brewing Beers like those you Buy' by David Line, which I see is still in print. I agree that a forum like this is a vast improvement.

I always add 1/2 teaspoon, don't see that it can hurt and costs almost nothing.

On my Wherry it hit 1.012 in 3 days, and the nelson Revenge went to 1.020 in 2 days and sat there for a while (3 more days). Uh oh I thought... stuck, but left it alone. Then after 6 days when I checked it had dropped to 1.014, then today 1.012. Not saying this is the yeast vit though for sure.

Agree with the forum's being a great resource, however, you still need to read around a lot and build your own experience (which I do not have yet  ).

For example regarding time in FV....

Brew It Yourself almost always say get out of FV as quick as possible after 2 readings... you will see comments such as "might be OK up to 2 weeks.

US forums tend to say "leave it in FV for 2 or 3 months as this cleans everything up before racking".

This forum tends to say "OK up to a month".

So, take your pick [-o<

I do all the same and I've noticed how it helps a good a fermentation. My Yorkshire Terrier Bitter has got down to 1.014 after only 3 days and I'm shall be checking it later this morning and expect it to be at least 1.012 if not lower.

The young's one is di-ammonium phosphate and a chlorate. I've also got a brupacks nutrient that doesn't say what is in it (just says vitamins, amino acids etc...).

I always add a level tea spoon, I cant see it doing any harm and may just save the brew, I see it as like a vitamin tablet
