ditch`s stout..
ditch`s stout..
morning all
might sound like a daft question but..
i picked up one of these favoured kits yesterday but they didnt have enough medium spraymalt for me to make it up to `the masters` instructions.
so being a clever dick i got half a kilo of light and half a kilo of dark instead.
now the question is,if i mix these together, is that the same as 1 kilo of medium?

Re: ditch`s stout..
Gravity-wise Yes, Colour-wise Dunno...maybe...but with the extract colour BLACK I doubt you'll notice. Should be good.

ive loosened the lid and removed the airlock. just put a clean tea towel over the hole. should be okay shouldnt it?

Re: ditch`s stout..
ok this has stopped being amusing now.
had to screw the lid back on a bit because the monster was pushing the top off.
now its bubbling out through the airlock hole. what should i do?

Re: ditch`s stout..
26 degrees? That's a bit warm isn't it? What's wrong with the 18 degree room? Or does Coopers need to be brewed at a higher temperature?
Re: ditch`s stout..
Hi lads, I too have had the same adventure with my (Ditch's / Coopers Stout), put it in the FV on Saturday afternoon, followed Ditch's/Coopers instructions to the letter (used MSM
) instead of sugar
whacked on the heating belt and off it went. By the time Sunday afternoon came around the Black Monster was rising from the FV and made around 5 bids for freedom after lifting the FV lid
So I proceeded to crack the lid a little and then scoop out the resulting foam with a big spoon before it got too messy
The fermentation had slowed some what by Sunday night and the lid was fully replaced. Just waiting for it to finsih and then its into the pressure barrel
@ Ditch, What do you use to prime your Coopers Stout before putting it into a barrel or bottles ? Going to get a big plastic tray from work to stand the FV in when I do the next batch, should I just crack the lid a little and just let the beer run its course and tidy the mess when its calmed down or should I be scooping out the foam as its building?
PS ! Cant wait to taste this Coopers Stout after reading rave reviews, will try and leave it for a few weeks 1st tho
Cheers DC

I don't, mate

Handling the fermentation? I guess a tray ~ if available ~ is a fair idea. I have concrete floors, see? I bung down wood shavings myself. Frankly, it's not the stuff inside or on the floor that bothers me. I concentrate on the stuff in between. I just don't like to see it all caking and drying onto the side of my FV's. I have this nasty suspicion that something untoward might use all that moist, old, air exposed stuff as a direct route over the top and into my wort.
Probably irrational.
Re: ditch`s stout..
thats exactly what i was worried about.
seems to have calmed down today though. still sitting at 24 degrees in a cupboard thats only 20.
im going to put the airlock back in today so hopefully nothing nasty has got in overnight. it had a clean tea towel on top.
fingers crossed.

Re: ditch`s stout..
just a quicky,
i had a crafty sniff at the airlock hole- blimey it stung my nose.
so i took a sample and the fg is down to 1012. a tiny sip didnt reveal any off taste so what do you reckon the nasty whiff was?

Re: ditch`s stout..
Stinging ye nose could be ..... Horror of Horrors!!! ... " Vinegar "
OR, it could just be the whiff of that protective blanket of CO2, etc which is still brooding beneath the 'lid' there and keeping the stuff below sweet, while it morphs into Coopers Stout.
Fact that ye didn't spit that snifter out like it was rats piss suggests the latter
