Dorothy Goodbodys Country Ale

I had the pleasure of tasting a bottle of this on the weekend, and it's quite simply one of the best beers I've EVER tasted. I have to try and replicate this, the website lists this beer as

Alc 6% Vol. 500ml. A strong ruby ale bursting with rich malt flavours and hop bitterness. Recently listed in World Top 50 Beers in the International Beer Challenge. Ingredients - Water, Malted Barley, Malted Wheat, Flaked Barley, Crystal Malt, Amber Malt, Roast Barley, Hops: Fuggles, Bramling Cross, Yeast.

I'm still not used to figuring out ingredient ratios and IBU's, what do people think for a 23L brew?

Here's something from Beer Smith I just knocked up, not sure about the style though? Or the ratios

4500gms Marris Otter
500gms Malted Wheat
420gms Crystal Malt
250gms Amber Malt
250gms Flaked Barley
250gms Roasted Barley

Not sure what AAU's it's supposed to have or boil time etc.
30gms Bramling Cross
30gms Fuggles

Ummm sound ok?

Edit: Forgot about yeast!!!!! Suggestions?

Seems a bit heavy handed on the roast barley, but then again i haven't tasted the beer you are trying to emulate so maybe it is quite roasty. What flavours did you pick out when drinking it?

Wye Valley, Dorothy Goodbody’s Country Ale (England)
(RP) This is the same beer in two formats, sold seasonally as 'Christmas Ale' - and Ms Goodbody looks especially appealing is her peek-a-boo Santa outfit. The strong ale is brewed with Maris Otter pale, crystal and amber malts with wheat malt and flaked barley. The hops are Bramling Cross and Fuggles. A splendid companion for tangy English cheeses, the beer has a ripe aroma of pear drops and ripe malt. Peppery hops make their presence felt in the mouth, balanced by a malt/toffee note. The finish is fruit and hoppy with a powerful underpinning of rich fruits. 6.0% ABV

Cool thanks! Still leaves me a bit clueless though! :=P

Does toffee flavour come from crystal malt? The reason I had the roasted barley in that proportion was because it gave just about the right colour according to Beer smith

Right definite flavour of toffee, a slight aroma of coffee (taste even less so). Quite peppery

Ok here's the modified recipe, reduced the roasted barley and upped a few of the other including the crystal malt and amber malt, to give a more toffee/biscuity flavour. So once again thoughts?

not tasted the real thing but I reckon it'll have some more Fuggles and BC at the end of the boil for flavour and aroma.

How did this one turn out? Planning on culturing up their yeast from a bottle of country ale...could be fun to try and clone the recipe too :D

I have some Wye Valley recipies from the 1500UK beer list.
It doesnt have all the info of all the beers, but there is may be something useful to help with making something close enough.
I didnt think Wye Valley beers were bottle conditioned, but having looked on there web site it appers they are. It's my local brewery.

Got a few colonies of it going on some agar plates at the moment. Slow to get going though - doesn't look like the yeast it that viable, but there's certainly some of the little blighters in there!
