Getting the best out of a kit

I understand that everyone has different views on making kits better but.....

What is the most common way to enhance a standard beer kit ie. 1.5kg kit?

Do you add glucose, spray malt or malt extract?
Boil extra hops?
Use a better yeast?

As AG brewing doesn't seem feasible at present, I am hoping I can achieve a close result from kit adaption
