HELP : Yorkshire Terrier Kit

Post by DogLaneBrewhouse » Mon Apr 20, 2009 6:51 pm

Hello all.

I am about to brew a Yorkshire Terrier kit this evening, and am struggling with the hop sachet. It is a sealed plastic sachet, but the instructions say to steep it in the FV in boiling water for 20 minutes, before adding the spray malt and topping up to 22.5 litres (0r so).

Surely this should be a muslin-type bag? How are the flavours supposed to get out of the plastic? And when do I take the hops out?

Please can someone help?

I had one of those sachets of hops, apprently you can add that when you like, so I've put half in, and when I come to drink it, if I feel it needs more? then I might just add a little to each glass I drink? only my way of doing it mind? :D happy brewing to you!!! You use a pipet, or eyedropper to do this!

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

However I'm still stumped as to how the flavour floods out of a sealed plastic sachet...? Do I just put the hops into the FV loose?

Any ideas?

I've decided to put the brew off until after the weekend, as I did not want to compromise the beer! Things are a bit hectic for the rest of the week.

Discretion and valour, etc. etc. etc.

Hi

I have just brewed the York Stonewall, I opened and emptied the sachet into the FV rather than putting the whole thing in. Seemed to do the trick but as it's still only sitting bubbling away in the airing cupboard right now I can't promise that this is the right course of action. I would be unsure with putting the sachet in especially as mine had a large sticky label on one side of it.

Good luck

Yeah, just cut the corner off, and shake it into your FV, thats all you do! gold knows what their on about with leaving it in the bag, but as I said, I just put half in for now, and the rest later! 8)

 Just curious ~ because I'd honestly Never have anything to do with a beer named after those vile little KC monstrosities .....

What form does this sachet contain, that ye can use a pipette or eye dropper on it? Liquid, one imagines? So, it's some kind of 'Liquid Hop Concentrate', eh? :|

Here's just a guess:

The Yorkshire Terrier I did about 12 months ago came with 1/2 dozen hop pellets which you steeped in hot water at the start.

I just put them all in the FV and left them there - the beer was fine (my first ever brew).

Perhaps they have now changed to hop extract but not yet changed the instructions on the box ?

Excellent comments all round.

I'm going into Hamstead Brewing later today, where I originally bought the kit, and see what Chris has to say. I'll post the response here later, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who is a little bit confused!

Thanks again all.

I've also done both the York Terrier and Stonewall kits recently. Just follow the instructions, removing the hop pellets from the plastic bag  and steep in boiling water and it will be fine.

My brews are both conditioning nicely and I'm really looking forward to drinking them.

Thanks for all your help.

Had a chat to Hamstead yesterday, and they say just to tip the hops in and steep them for ten to fifteen before adding the rest of the water and the wort, etc, and they will fall out into the yeasty sludge before kegging. So all good there.

Someone did say that earlier, so my apologies for having little faith.

That's the end of this thread then, I guess.

TTFN.
